What is it? Any suggestions?? I've always fed normal protein and sometimes mixed soy beans with corn. I found some cheap black eyed peas and wondering if its worth trying??

I've heard good things about blackeyed peas. I haven't ever found enough to try it though. I know they will eat it as soon as it sprouts.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Black eyed peas are great if you can find them. Mind to share where you got them?

Never done the peas personaly but I hear they work great. Soybean works great too! Look at those Iowa monsters. They hit the soybean hard. Corn (Depending on soil and growing conditions) is about 7 % protein per kernel. Soybean around 15 % but the bean is less than half the size of the kernel. Some Soy crops can be hit with sudden death syndrome then the beans can be the size of BB's. I have no idea on the peas.

I have fed them free choice. Deer eat them well and they will usually run around 26% protein. Once deer eat them they really like them. If cheaper in price than protein then they are a value. Bad thing is they are low in fiber and minerals. If they get to be to much protein in the deers diet then you can start to see some elongated hooves. Usually in a drought or overstock situation is when you have to worry. You will need to add some mineral blocks or mineral licks to increase them if your deer need them. Supplies can be bad in some areas. Also the "splits" can have a lot of trash or hulls/pods in them when they are culled at the buyer. If you get whole cleaned peas then it is a good buy. If you get lots of trashy split or cull peas then not as good a buy. The deer will eat some of the hulls or pods at times. The trashier splits do not flow as well out of a feeder also. Deer will do good on them and be very fat. If you have good habitat then they can be a great value if you can find the supplies to keep feeding them.

Peas will run around 26% protein depending on the variety on the pea itself. If animals are eating the bean or pea with the pod then the protein value will be less due to the added fiber. The green growing plant leaves can run from 22 to 30% protein. Lab Lab always over 30% on the leaf protein that I know of was checked. New or fresh growth on all those plants for the highest quality and protein values.

I just looked in Corn and Soy digest. Soybean protein content is a National Average of 34% depending on growing conditions.. So much for the Heartland Co Op intel.

Stx is deadon with this observation. (elongated hooves) also known as floundering. I mix black eye peas with protien when I find the right deal. Cottonseed works well too just have to get the deer to try it then get them off before September. The other thing to worry about is in the summer with the high heat the deer can overheat from too much protien.

I think what he was telling you was that they green soybean when eaten directly from the plant will run 15% due to it having a pod with it. More fiber than bean. I know the mesquite bean run as high as 30-32% protein but when you factor in the bean and the pod together it drops to 15-17%.

We mixed black-eyed peas and corn one year, but could never get the deer to eat the black-eyed peas. Deer would pick the corn out and leave the peas. This occurred back when it used to rain and anytime it rained and you pulled up to one of our feed pens shortly afterward, it smelled like my grandmother's kitchen because we always had black-eyed peas when we would eat there on Sundays.

We have tried feeding both black eyed peas and green/yellow peas. The black eyed peas were mixed with corn and protein, and the deer literally picked around the black eyed peas and ate the corn and protein. We fed the green/yellows peas straight, and the deer absolutely destroyed them. Both were fed free choice.

We had a ranch manager that made us feed a protein mix one year. It had peas in it and the deer would pick around them. The birds seemed to like them though.

If I were gonna feed black eyed peas I would plant them.

Well I put them out this weekend. Bought a pallet @ 14.50/bag. Mixed it with half corn and put a camera on it. Will see how the deer like it!

I'd try planting them too. In La. deer destroy whole pea fields. We have some heavy deer over there too.
