Has anybody else noticed a significant increase in the number of white-wings/white-tipped in North Texas?

Just around the house, I have seen a ton of 'em already... More than I can remember ever seeing before.

Are they on the rise in North Texas?

All I see in Dallas are white-wings mainly now. They have been here for years though. They migrate to my backyard when my neighbors tree drops some kind of berries. But when I hunt just 20 miles away all we shoot are mournings. I still have never shot a whitewing.

White wings are becoming dependent on feeders in urban areas to survive where they become perennial residents. They don't go out to the fields to feed so you never get to shoot at them because they are gorging themselves at a backyard feeder. I have heard the term "City Pigs" used for them.

Their range has been continually moving North since the 70's. They used to be only South of San Antonio.

Instead of Mojo Dove Decoys just get yourself some backyard feaders and hang them at the lease.

I am even seeing them out here in the panhandle. Not a lot but a few. I see quite a few in Lubbock, along with all those collard doves.

Beginning September 1 I will be sitting on the back porch with a pellet gun!

On the contrary, in San Antonio the birds roost in the city and fly out to the ag fields in the morning to feed. Local hunters have been taking advantage of this daily migration for yrs. My first experience was in Hondo which is 40 miles away. It was the coolest thing cuz we were in the corn fields early but it took the birds a good hr to fly out to the fields. I was starting to get nervous that it would be a bust but sure enough when they got there they were in droves and circled the field high like geese and then dropped in. Needless to say shooting white wings was a lot easier for me who was used to mourners which are about a third smaller and seem to fly more eratically. Needless to say it was a quick morning and a really cool experience.

down south is part of their normal range and that is normal. Further North is a different case. I don't think they are in the numbers they are South.

A few years ago, I was shocked when I saw my first white-wing in Fort Worth. Now they're as common as mourning doves, at least in my neighborhood. And some are almost as big as pigeons, too.

Same thing here in Plano and especially up towards Allen. I see them around here headed north every morning (to Frisco/Allen to feed???) and back south every evening.

We have seen alot more this year in the McKinney area, and TONS in the grayson county area. My buddy shot his 1st one yesterday after dreaming about it for the last 3 years. I would say somewhere between 20-30% of the population are white wing this year.

We live on 50 acres just N.W. of Hillsboro and 2 years ago we where covered up in White Wings. I sat in my back yard under a Live Oak everyday I could and had a blast. They didn't show up last year or this year. Do have some Eurasion Collard dove this year though, Mourning Dove finally showed up yesterday and it got pretty busy, guess the front pushed some birds to us...finally!
