1911 grips? Are they universal? #415182 08/27/08 04:05 AM

Are 1911 grips universal? I have a Taurus PT 1911 that I would like to get some new grips for but I am not finding many that indicate that they are specifically for the PT 1911 so I wanted to be sure before I just ordered some random colt grip and it not fit. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I think most of the 1911 grips are universal within each size or capacity. Fullsize, commander and officer models. If you take your grips with you to a gun show and compare I think you will see this. There are typically a lot of vendors with new and takeoffs at the shows. One thing to watch for is if the gun has an extended safety or ambi safeties there may be a clearance issue. This has been my experience with these. Hope that helps some.

For the most part yes, some of the off brands might be a little different, and like bigfoot mentioned the safety issues...can't remember for sure which one, but there was one of the custom gun makers, Wilson maybe, that had enlarged grip screw holes, as did the Sig GSR first series guns...

I have several sets of grips for mine. I have 2 pt 1911's and a Kimber custom and its all interchangable, as long as you purchase the correct size grips for your frame. Just make sure that if you order grips that they are cut for the ambi safety, or request that they get cut. Also, if you ever decide to get crimson trace laser grips, you will have to remove the ambi safety. Ebay always has some nice wood grips, you can get them really cheap if you just bid your max and stop there, if someone out bids, dont bid over, just bid on the next set.

Some of the Llama 1911 grips are not interchangable.

Most should be universal. I have not run into any that are not.

I don't think any of the Llama grips interchange. In fact, I'm not sure that any of the parts do, except for magazines, and even that is a one-way thing: 1911 mags fit just fine in Llamas, but Llama mags are a little too thick to work in 1911's.

(Apologies if I hijacked the thread.)
