Been looking around at rifles and need a little help. I'm looking for something that comes in 270 or 308. Needs to have a 20" or 22" fluted barrel. Can be wooden or laminated stock. I'm very familiar with Remingtons and know what they have but I have no idea about Winchester, kimber, tikka, browning, or savage. Ill be using it to hunt white tails or mulies; I have an ADL 30-06 and a 700P 308, but I'm wanting something a little more accurate than the ADL and lighter than the 700P. Thought about a 700LTR but I've got a soft spot for wood stocks. So any pointers at what to look at helps. Thanks

Cabelas has plenty of guns that fit that description. As for the brands you mentioned, Savage and Tikka shoot great right out of the box. Most quality brands will shoot great with a good cleaning and a little bit of barrel break in.

If your looking for light weight, Kimber Mountain Ascent .308 might fit the bill.

I have a savage in the classifieds. I can spray paint the stock for you to give it a wood grain feeling.

Thanks fellas. Wish I lived close to a bass pro or cabelas. Only have a gander and academy within 300 miles. Always interesting to see what people have to say about brands I'm not familiar with

Your post says stainless fluted 270 or 308 with wood or laminate. So that leaves the CDL, Sako Varmint 308, Kimber Varmint, Weatherby Mark V (I think I've seen stainless fluted), and a Savage 12 with the fluted heavy barrel and laminate stock. The fluted barrel is tough to come by with a wood stock. Any of those would be good rifles if you wanna pay for them. The Sako 85 Varmint is a bad dude.

You say you're familiar with Remington, but I bet you haven't seen one of these... Remington Model Seven "whitetail classic". Fluted 22" blue barrel, laminated stock, in 270 WSM. Unfortunately, only available is wsm's (270 and 300). Beautiful gun. Got my best friend one for Christmas.

That ADL may just need a severe cleaning, inlet the bbl channel,
and some trigger work..I've had about 10 or more and they all shot as well as my BDL's ect..mostly one hole groups or they don't eat in my feed trough....If you want nice wood, get ready to pay..that's the first bump on any weapon..and also a negative
as it will wark ect..The Savage will not hve nice wood, but you can get a laminated stock..I'd not put a .270 in a short bbl..you
lose too much..24 to 26in min..you can get away w/a lot on a .308
but both of mine are 26 in..DD

The new M70s seem nice. If I where in the market for a classic wood stock hunting rifle it would probably be a M70.

Model 70s come in synthetic and laminate, also.

Poster wants both light and fluted, but sport contour barrels are not normally fluted, and heavy barrels are not normally considered light (fluted or not). Definitely take a look at the Winchesters.

What about that Ruger bolt action tactical rifle? I believe it has a 18 or 20 inch barrel in 308.

The darn thing is still sitting in the box. Can't quite find a scope with ample magnification that's not too big.

My best friend collects model sevens and he hasn't had any that weren't shooters till now, so I'm sure he'll get this one to shoot just as well. Definitely the best looking model7 in his collection for now.
