With the Pan-STARRS comet visible in our hemisphere, I tried for a shot for two nights in a row in Dallas hoping to capture it with a cityscape in the foreground to make it a tad more interesting. Due to clouds on the first night and haze and light pollution on the second night, my attempts to capture a comet shot with a Dallas cityscape failed. I really loathe light pollution and wish everyone would do their part to turn off the lights at night. They are rarely beneficial and a plague on our society.

On the third night I headed north to Lake Ray Roberts in hopes of getting far enough away from the light pollution for a decent shot. Even at Lake Ray Roberts the comet was still really too dim to see with naked eyesight, however it was visible with binoculars after the clouds cleared.

Since it was so faint, really just a smudge at best even with flyboy vision, I opted to pass on the wide angle shot. Wide angle nightscape shots are always more interesting as they add a touchstone that helps put the subject in focus in our minds eye. Instead of shooting wide, based on the limited conditions I shot it tight with one of the super telephoto Canon lenses I use to chase feather and sports shots with.

After chasing the comet for three nights, I finally manage a shot. On the drive up to Ray Bob I nearly turned around as the only clouds in the sky were thick on the western horizon and looked like they would block the shot. Thankfully they cleared in time to get a comet shot and while they were initially an obstacle for comet hunters, they helped create a memorable sunset for all the people camping at Ray Roberts over the spring break holiday.

At least anything worthy of mentioning.

Awesome shot!

There comes a time when honest debate, serious diplomatic efforts, and logical arguments have been exhausted and only men and women willing to take up arms against evil will suffice to save the freedom of a nation or continent.

Nicely done. That looks like the Andromeda galaxy just below the comet.
