it is free, under the Texas summer sun. Just get outside without shirt and your hide is tanned or burned. Sorry, could not resist.

There is a tanning kit made by Van Dykes that is sold at Cabelas that works great. I have tanned bobcats, foxes, whitetail deer, and even an aoudad. Every hide has turned out real soft just like it would if you sent it to a tannery.

Anytime! If you have any questions just send me a pm. Also if you like how it turns out you can get more for your money on the Van Dykes website.

You could try the method use. However I have not figured out how to easily soften the hide after tanning. I start be salting the hide twice, for 24 to 48 hrs each time. Then mix 2.5 pounds of salt and 2.5 pounds of aluminum sulfate in 5 gallons of water. If you have a smaller or larger hide, use the same ratio and it will be fine. Let the hide stay in that solution for 14 days, stirring occassionally to prevent settling of the salt and sulfate.

Elkslayer your method is fine, you just left out a third step! You need a oil to oil the skin after aluminum sulfate that softens the skin. Oil the skin... skin side up and as it drys stretch and break it over a table edge till its dry and soft, May take several days.

SNAKESKIN: Just finished a 24" Coral snakeskin. Skin snake and flesh hide with a spoon scraping with the scale grain. Then I used 1 part Glycerine to 1 part rubbing alcohol bath for 2-3 days. Stir skin in solution daily to keep solution mixed. Gently wring hide of excess solution, stretch/tack out flat and then coat skin with pure glycerine for a day or 2. Wipe excess glycerine from hide and I rolled mine in paper towels to help stay flat edge to edge. Making my Father the Coral snake hat band he has always wanted/talked about ever since I can remember but never got. Will post pictures when finished...
