The base you are using with the front dove tail and rear elevation screws will not last on that rifle. The recoil will shear off the rear ears at the windage screws. I've seen it many times. I would upgrade to the rail ASAP with some good rings. I think I have a Rem 700 long action 20 moa if you are interested. I have some awesome long range 300 WM loads, but I have no 300 WM brass to load right now.

Chad. I'm not familiar with that base so forgive if this an ignorant question. But he said the rifle would have a muzzle brake. Would that not bring the recoil down enough so that it would not be a problem?

I have put over 300 rounds through my 300wby with that base and its still going fine. And all but 20 of those have been 180 grain and up.

It would help. I've seen a braked 30-378, a 300 Weatherby, and 2- 300 WM sheer off the ears on the bottom of the rings with the rear windage screw mounts. After seeing this, I'll never use them again. Sure they work. But when see them break multiple times, I can't trust them. Not on any gun that I rely on in the field.

Sometimes it is easy to see the advantage of some older tried and true calibers, and cost can be one. smile

I have sheared the ears off one in 300 WM, so make that Three.

I went to tactical type bases on my 308 Rem 700 L/H because the
Leupold/Redfield type rings w/loosen ect..and the screws even w/loctite also loosen..I have a 300 Wthrby Mark V and my buddy a Sako 30-378..both have had or do have the same Redfd. type adj. rings. and both have breaks..w/very large scopes..312XTR Burris
w/30mm tubes..they don't get shot enough to have a problem..but the same scope on a heavy Rem 700 308 did and I changed the bases
and rings..Over the yrs in mounting lots of scopes at the gun club, I can say that though a problem to get exact..Weaver type bases and rings rarely are a problem properly installed.DD

IMO, if you go with the rear windage screw base (ears), it's not if they break, it's when. There's no way I will ever use them again. I shoot too much and rely on my rifle to much to buy crappy rings and bases. It's the most important part of holding the scope solid on the rifle.

I agree with this. Even before hearing about the problems I planed to swap it out. It just never seemed to be a SOLID mounting solution with the pinch point and twist mount.
