I have a small collection of pistols (the tradition definition as in semiauto). From the most powerful desert eagle to the wee defensive mouse guns.

Over a large number of years there is one caliber and one pistol that continually prove its self to be the most practical and useful pistol. The irony is the pistol is discontinued. How can that be. Why did the shooting public not see the true value of the pistol. Accurate, fast, easy to run. Reliable. Badguys, hunting anything in Texas. Competition?

I think the lack of adoption by any major LEO agency over the long term was a death blow to the 10mm. The cartridge is certainly very impressive, but ammo cost/availability nixes it as an "only" pistol for me.

As to the 3rd gen S&W's lack of popularity, one word- Glock. Their appearance on the market and rock bottom price was fatal to the S&W. I have owned a couple of 3rd gen Smiths and they are decent guns, but I just don't particularly like the sights, grips, or the overall feel of the weapon. Plus the slide stop retaining spring always seemed very cheesy to me.

Empty it weighs 42 oz. Running Underwood 220 hard cast bullet @ 1200 fps (703 ft/lb) the 42 oz comes in handy. Very few semiauto bust as much bone as the 220 gr underwood and keep on plowing.

180 gr Berry FP plated bullet at mid range is a steel plate tumper. You can run it with a cast bullet and enough powder to make power factor and shoot IDPA matches.

I admit 42 oz is a bit heavy for carry. When pig hunting in the out backs of South Texas I carry it concealed in fanny pack rig designed for carry. Then the one gun is a hunting pistol andva defensive pistol.

Along with the 1006 I have two G20s. Gen 3 weighs in at 32 oz. I have carried it many times. I had to have a Colt Delta Elite and a Dan Wesson.

I do like the G20s a lot and have hunted and shot the extensively. The deal is my skill level. If your goal is to recover your target in the least amount of time you need to be able to put your shot in the 10X At 20 yds. The 4# trigger on the 1006 (custom work) makes up for like of skill.

Actually at first a few LEO like the FBI did adopt the 10mm...problem with the 10mm was the fact that most organizations that adopted it went with a reduced power load with a 180gr bullet....once the 40S&W became available then the 10mm in that loading became mute. Why have a larger framed pistol with fewer rounds when you can have a 9mm size pistol, shoot the exact same 180gr loading but with more ammo in the mag? THAT was the death (or at least limiting force) for the 10mm...it still has it's fans and always will. But that doesn't change the fact that the 40S&W does what it can with reduced loads in a smaller package and for the bigger is better fans 11mm always trumps 10mm..

I like my Springfields.

I gave my son a Sig 229 and also one to my daughter and all three of us really like the gun. As good as the Sig is, though, my son likes to plink with his springfield more than with the Sig. My personal carry favorite is the Kimber CDP Ultra II. Probably the best carry weapon of any I've carried.

I just found a 1026 the other day to go along with my delta elite.

i have a S&W 1006 also....use to have a 1076 as well but trade it off last year. My intended purpose of buying a 10 mm was to use it as a backup pistol when hunting pigs and that caliber works very well. A 1006 can handle the stoutest of loads and it's a real pussycat to shoot with such loads , however i will probably sell or trade mine off just because these Smiths are getting to be somewhat collectible and i'm not gonna put such a pretty gun through the rigors of a backup pig pistol

Kind of always wanted a 10mm and may bite the bullet yet in getting one in a nice 1911 package, like a Fusion or Dan Wesson.

For hunting purposes for now I guess I'll stick with my revolving pistols in 44 Mag.

IMO the 10mm is the most impressive practical (a subjective term) pistol cartridge out there. The 50AE is a behemoth and is completely impractical for on-the-body carry even though I am sure its performance on game would be plenty impressive...I just can't imagine packing a freekin' Desert Ego for long.

I'd like to have something in 10mm one of these days. I wish there were more pistols chambered for the 10. I think of it as being close to a .41 Mag in a self-loader. In the meantime I'll have to "get by" with my .40 S&Ws and .45 ACPs.
