I'm new to the 1911 world and was wanting some advice on a good round to use when carrying concealed. I've heard of rounds that are less likely to go through walls and doors if you miss your target but not sure what they are. Not that I'm not confident with my placement but in the situation where a ccw is actually used you never know what may happen. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well ...
If you are using fixed sights, as most .45 carry guns do, you are pretty well limited to the bullet weight with which the pistol was regulated. My take on things is that ANY .45 load will penetrate far less than the equivalent load in a 9mm, and any hollow point load will penetrate far less than a FMJ. You've got a better chance of a .45 HP stopping than any other sensible handgun cartridge. Nevertheless, you OWN any bullet that you fire until it stops moving.
I carry a .45, but keep a shotgun under the bed, because I know my external bricks will stop that. At the end of the day, there's no substitute for awareness and having your head in the game.

To add to what my friend syncerus says...CorBon offers the Glaser Safety Slug to address your specific concerns with over-penetration. Check it out right here. I think there are probably other specialty rounds available by now, but I just don't keep up with factory ammo anymore. It's against my principles as a handloader.

I handload also but carry only factory loads as I have been advised that prosecutors try to paint any handload as your own brand of evil ammunition. Just a thought.

As mentioned already, the Glaser Safety Slug is the best for home defense/Concealed carry. But if you can't find them here are a few others that are good too: Magtech First Defense Justice Remington Golden Saber (+P) Federal Hydra-Shok All of those are very good rounds for HD/CC. If you have the time and money, try several to see what you like best!

I know an old lawyer who is an avid hunter, shooter, and handloader who tells me that this is a myth. You might want to evaluate that advice, Don. I believed the same thing for years.

Speer Gold Dot HP 230gr 45acp.
Should feed in the 1911 w/o modifications.

Thankfully everyone can believe as they choose. My advise came from a very successful litigator that I trust fully. I hope our friends never meet in court.

I like to use Speer Gold Dots.
You can buy the factory rounds to carry, and get the projectiles for reloading and practice with them.

May the inside of a courtroom be something we never see, except as jurors---and infrequently at that.

1911? What will feed reliably may limit your choices. I find the heavy, 230gr HP's, tend to work for me. The shape and size of the cavity might cause some to hang up. For me only 1911's seem finicky with HP's. Just so happen that they are my favorite pistols. I have and have had other .45's, but I will always prefer them in 1911's.
Live right. Do right. Demand the same in others. Screw off. Lie and cheat. Have no regard for the actions of others.
You tell me which takes, and ultimately makes, a Man.

Well said. And I want to re-iterate that the GREAT thing about this entire thread is that you're asking and thinking about your load choices past your magazine. That's more than most others would do so kudos. I carry in .45 and run Hornady Critical Defense loads and find they feed well and I know the expansion of their hollow point will stop when it hits anything solid if and when it gets through the guy I shoot with it.

Winchester PDX-1 here, 230 grain bonded JHP
Really wouldn't worry about over penetration with the 45 either, more so what feeds and shoots best.
* One “Aw-Sh*t” wipes out ALL “At-A-Boys” The difference between shooting and soothing is one "H"'s placement.
