Can someone please explain to me how the hunting lease practice got so far out of hand in Texas. Before moving here I never even heard of a hunting lease and no one I knew ever paid a guide or a landowner a penny to hunt for anything. How did this happen? As Vince Lombardi said "What the hell is going on around here?

A bit of friendly advice...this coming from someone who, like you, moved to Texas from Elsewhere:

Texans don't care how you did it up north.

If something is different from what you're used to, adapt. Don't just presume because it's different that it's "out of hand." It's not a question of right or wrong.

If you expect everything to be like it was in back home in Noo Yawk, you're really, really going to hate living here.

I have a question here. I am just curious, and am not trying to stir up anything.

I have just been wondering, Sabrinavonbach, you seem to be so down on Texas, why join a internet forum that was set up to mainly talk about Texas hunting?

I guess maybe I am just too simple minded to understand it, but you talk about how you used to hunt Texas, and then talk about how wrong everything is with the system that is in place here.

What good do you really get out of being involved on this site, if you feel or think the way hunting is done here is so backwards or wrong?

I have hunted out of state, and even in Canada a couple of times, but I still love hunting here.

I do not get to hunt as much as I used to, because of personal choice, I just ain't gonna pay the prices, and I do agree with you that things are out of hand as far as prices are going.

I do not agree that everyone not hunting for a year will bring about a change, it won't, too many Out of State hunters are coming here as license sales attest.

People are not just going to stop hunting, hoping things will change from one year to the next, the people running the hunting operations will be able to attract clients.

Like I say, I am not trying to or intending to stir up anything, I just would like to understand how participating on a site dealing with a place you evidently dislike in many ways accomplishes anything. JMO.

P.S., don't forget to calculate the cost of gas or airfare into the bottom line )

Ever hear of air miles? Get a credit card that gives you airmiles and you're halfway there.

Sure BMD I'd be happy to answer your question. I grew up in blue collarsville where fishing and hunting were dirt cheap. I learned a few lessons there and managed to do quite will financially. What I've seen that bothers me is that the common guy is getting squeezed out. Not only is he getting squeezed out but he thinks has has to buy all these accoutrements. The ultimate outcome is the end of hunting as we know it and for that matter fishing is next. What I'm telling you guys is to THINK before you spend. There are a lot of options out there that never come to mind. Food for thought.

Well.........I see we have a long way to go in trying to make this a civilized conversation.

What future has hunting of any kind got if we can't even discuss why people feel the way they do about the issue and respect them for at least having an opinion and being willing to give it.

What you need to realize is that war against guns and the 2nd amendment is strongly tied to hunting. It hasn't hit here yet, but it will. Stats seem to suggest that numbers of hunters are decreasing. There are fewer and fewer places where families, fathers/sons/daughters can go. It's like in professional sports. Baseball was the working man's game. A guy could take his family to a game without it bankrupting him. Now what do you have? Corporate sponsors and box seats that cost an arm and a leg. Again, food for thought.

Sorry it was someone else. PT Barnum had a saying of which your answer reminds me.

Bingo Crazy Horse. You have hear all sides. A new guy from NY comes here and he's exposed to people who promulgate a system which has gotten out of hand. What's wrong with wanting to save fellow hunters a few dollars?

In the words of the infamous Phil Gramm "We have become a nation of whiners" Not an exact quote but close enough.

As was stated "you gotta pay if you wanta play"

Combat Infantryman, the ultimate hunter where the prey shoots back.

Sure, this oughta be interesting where else can you hunt for what we spend on leases for two months of rifle, a month of bow, and all the varmint and pig hunting you want the rest of the year, oh yeah and dont forget dove and turkey as well, I would be interested in knowing how you are going to have all these hunts for the price of a lease. Go ahead and explain!
