Always wanted one, not sure if 30-30 or 30.06 is the way to go. Hog, coyote, paper punching mainly
Not looking to break the bank but I figure it's gunna get expensive no matter what, lol
I see mossbergs can be had under $500.

Keep any eye out for 30-30 marlins and winchesters. I'd take one of those over a mossberg lever action.

You can find a Marlin usually scopped for under $350.00 and are excellent shooters of the 30-30 round.

JUST TRY to stay away from the remington made marlins. Get one that has the JM stamp on the barrel or a Glenfield...they were made by Marlin.

Lever 30.06 is going to be expensive.I would buy a used Marlin or Winchester 30-30.

I think the plague of the Marlin/Remington transaction is over, yes their for a while they were not worth looking into but ive seen some of the latest ones out and they're not bad I picked up a new 1895sbl and a 1894c both are late model (rep) stamped barrels but (North Haven, Conn) is still on the barrels and i havent had a bit of troble, finish on the 1894c could be better but its not enough to complain about, Ive had more trouble out of my pre-safety 1894 than my new one.
Just be sure and look them over and cycle the lever, if you decide on a (rep) stamped remlin.

My Marlin 30-30 was made in 1969 "The Texan" model. It has the gold saddle ring, straight stock and gold trigger topped with a Leupold 1x4 v 11 scope and it is ONE BAD MAMJAMA !!! Shoots 5 in a dime at 100yds and will POP the freakin Smack Down on Pork ! I will NEVER get rid of this gun. Hope You find a good one !

The fit/finish is good. The action cycles flawlessly. Even with my old eyes it will print you a 1 1/2 group all day at 100yds.

What's the typical accuracy range for one of these in 30-30?

Traditionally, 30-30 was good at less than 200 yards. Leverevolution ammo supposedly extends range out to 250+. I have a Marlin 1895G (45-70) and absolutley love it. I wouldn't worry about range though. I think a Lever is best topped with a peep sight, not a scope. A good peep or ghost ring makes a handy, quick little brush gun, and plenty accurate out to 100 yards.

Kmon1 has a lever action carbine in .357 mag. It's probably one of the nicest rifles I've ever shot. I don't think it was a Rossi or a Henry, it may have been a Marlin 1894 336SS. I wish I could remember what it was.

I've got one of the last, pre Rem, Marlin 1894SS in 44mag. I ran ghost rings for a few years before installing a 2x7 Leopold.
I sighted it at 100 yards rather than the traditional 50. Using cheap 240gr Win White Box JSP's I was consistently exploding golf ball sized caliche rocks at 100-200 yards. 300 yards, I was still hitting softball sized targets consistently.
I didn't want to scope it, because I was afraid it wouldn't group well. I love the gun so much, I just didn't want to know it was off.
After running 50 rounds with the new glass, you'd think I'd just dropped a 200 inch muley; the whoopin and hollars of relief and amazement. Needless to say, I'll be buried with that gun.

I wish I could remember what it was. 1894 Limited LSS they made 250 of them in each caliber 357, 41 and 44 Mag, that I know of. ChadTRG42 has one in 44 Mag that a pic or two has been posted before on here. I only know where one other 357 is and it belongs to a good friend.

I would go the a Marlin in either 357 or 44. Either will get you what you are looking for. I have both and have killed many critters with my 357. It also doubles as my home defense gun or at least one of them....

I have a SS Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. Fun gun to shoot. Well balanced, quick handling.
Only problem I have had is in feeding the Leverevolution rounds. They don't feed reliably and will jam the action. Guy I bought it from said there's a specific follower you can buy to remedy the problem, but I didn't have any luck finding one.
Love the gun, and it's devastating on pigs.

I have the blued finish 1895G in 45-70. I have put probably 4-5 boxes of LeverEveolution ammo through mine without any feeding difficulty.
What year is yours? Was it after the Freedom Group buy out?

Love my 45-70 1886 Winchester. Its one of 500 made in its style. It's a heavy beast though. Fun to shoot a makes an awesome hog gun. If i were choosing now, I'd go. 45-70 in a winchester or marlin first (I've shot both and like the Winchester better), 444 in a marlin guide second, 35 remington in a marlin 336 third, 44 mag in a winchester 1892 or marlin fourth and 30-30 in a marlin 336 or 94 Winchester fourth. My next one will be the 92 Winchester.

with the hornady Leverevolution ammo, this follower will probably help you the most. not saying the aluminum one won't make a difference, i have personally made several out of aluminum for different guns, to find they helped out. but the one below has the dimple in the middle. actually now that i think about it, buying the aluminum one and putting a dipple in the middle would be the way to go. the one in the picture below looks like plastic http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/rec...-prod20417.aspx
