I have several kinds of brass I reload for my 308's and have a
Lyman Die Set F/L which has been giving me a fit resizing..finally stuck a case..I'd been using some RCBS dies JM at the Gun Club loaned me and all of my others are mostly RCBS, except a Lee, and 2 pistol dies that are Pacific Duracrome....Any of you using Lyman..I had to order a set over
the Net..Bass Pro Shop is about empty in San Antonio,,and don't
hardly have any pistols or rifles...either..DD

Nope. Everything but Lyman, but not because I avoid Lyman.

Don, I'm unclear as to your post. Do you need a set of 308 dies or just wondering if anyone has experienced problems with Lyman in 308? Guess I am asking if this is a request or a FYI?

No, I ordered a set from the net..RCBS..but I was having a real problem resizing some cases..LC Arsenal, and factory with the Lymans..until I had one pull out of the shell holder..so I'm off
to Weymeyer Mach & Welding to get Gino to clear that die. I was
using some RCBS FL/& Neck Sizing Dies on the same cases w/out problem..I just wondered if anyone uses Lyman Die's and has had
same exp..and I was lubeing the heck out of them, in case anyone
thinks that could be it..and the dies are new..only used them a
very few times..DD

I know it's not much help Don but I've been researching with the intent to get into reloading, (I know, I know, bad timing.) and I've read that more than a few people have had trouble with some Lyman dies. Same problem you're describing. Take it for what it's worth - second hand info. Sorry, no 1st hand experience yet.

I know now it was not the brass, I finished all of the brass and more this AM w/the new RCBS dies without a problem..I'll get the Lymans cleared and readjust in case I'm at fault and if they are still that stiff send them back..I've got a Lyman Dmps III, and have used a lot of their other items with out any problems. I have found that occasionally chucking up a cleaning jag and patch in a drill, with some form of polishing compound and running it up into the die for a few seconds does wonders (after removing the expander of course). Some folks have never been told that you need to clean your dies with more than an occasional shot of WD40.

It is real easy to remove a stuck case. Drill out the primer hole with a number 7 drill or close to it after pulling the decapping pin out as far as you can. Don't go too deep. Take a 1/4 - 20 tap and make some threads then using some washers with enough bore to allow the case to be pulled out. a suitable socket works, place it over the end of the die and screw a piece of all thread or long threaded screw with a nut on it into the case. Tighten the nut and it pull the case out. RCBS makes a kit to do the same thing.

Hey Don, just my 2 cents worth. I've been reloading for over 50 years, started with one of the little Lee's that you had to use a hammer with. In handgun calibers, go with the Dillon carbides for straight wall. For rifle, go Dillon if you can get them and if not go with Redding. Dillon is one of the most knowledgable people around on reloading and he has the no BS warranty. If it breaks on their reloaders, they will replace the part or machine, whatever it takes. The Dillon dies allow the shell to enter the resize die easier than with any other set I've ever used because it is chamferred. Not saying some of the others are bad, just that the Dillon and Redding are really good.

I had two a full lgth & neck sz RCBS that I was using without problems on same brass..I've had these new Lyman Dies since I'd borrowed the others from JM at the Club..and I returned his and started on mine..after this much of a problem and using the new
set of RCBS, I doubt that I'll use Lyman Dies again..I've also been reloading since about 1960, so I have a little history at it. Have all 4 shotgun reloaders, plus rifle and pistol..but don't do the handguns anylonger..too old to work w/one and never
much played after my youth and carrying one for money all those
yrs..DD

Don, have you ever used a Dillon 550B? Even with the rifle calibers you can crank out a round each pull of the handle if you want. I still weigh each round and keep the progressive turrent going except for the station for the powder. I've weighed thousands of rounds after the Dillon drops the powder and they are nearly always within 1/10th grain. Sure makes it nice on the little 9mm, 45acp, or pistol rounds like these.

I don't shoot my handguns much any longer because I don't work with one any longer..My buddy JM at the gun club has the MEC auto
loaders for his shotguns 20,28,&410. He loads several 5 gal buckets full first of the Skeet season and uses them all the way thru the State and World Shoots as well as his local shoots here
without issue. Doris Siebert and Rowland have a pistol cartridge
reloading business I think in Bandera, as she and he won the Bianci Cup and compete, plus one of my customers in town had a retail reloading pistol cartridge business..but he got in trouble
when one of his blew up a Glock from a Sheriffs ofcr. at the Academy..DD

I have a redding FL and Neck size die, then I use a Forester micrometer seating die.

I have a set of RCBS dies, but don't really use them now that I have the reddings.

In .308 there are neck sizing, full length sizing and small base sizing dies. Small base dies resize the base or web area of the case to tighter tolerances which are necessary for most semi auto designs.

Sticking a case in the die is almost always related to lack of lube. Yes dirt and scratches can also contibute to the problem as well as torn up case rims letting go.

A lot of guys try to circumvent the lube (ouch). Try cleaning your die real good. Brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner and then a shot of WD. The rule of thumb on lube is: too much = dents at the shoulder, not enough = stuck case.....

Try cleaning the die and try a paste lube applied by finger tip.
