I have some coyotes that found my goats. What is the law for using snares to catch them? I found one hole in the fence they have been using. How would you use a snare on this hole? The hole is about 16-18" wide and around 10-12" tall and goes underneath a chain link fence. How big should the snare be set to? Should it be on the ground or off of the ground? What else should I do to make it successful if it is legal? I have only snared beavers.

Need approximately a 9" circle, placed 1" off the ground. There are also ways to "tweak" a snare.
You can use snares, but have to check them every 36 hours or less.

Where are you in Parker Co? I am on the Wise /Parker line, may be able show you if your interested.

Got this one Monday with a snare

Ive been snaring coyotes on a high fence operation since December 5 last year and there has been 20 snared as they crawl under the high fence. Just run your loop just off the ground and around eight to ten inches in diameter. Use logs or rocks to funnel them into your snare wire loop. As far as holding the loop there I use baling wire pinched almost together to hold the loop. Use two loop holders to make sure the loop holds shape unless you buy loaded snares. As far as snare types I use 5/64 wire 7x7 with a cam lock and a 9 gauge swivel. Its a combo ive been buying at The Snare Shop or try Dakota Trapping product number GRDS1. Best of luck with it!

I am in Hudson Oaks. I have a handful of snares I bought from the Snare Shop for beavers. I would assume they would work.

Is there a law against snaring coyotes?

It is legal to snare coyotes... There are rules for using them, like must be checked a minimum of every 36 hrs.

I my be down near Hudson Oaks in the next 7 days (Mueller Steel)

You should be able to find out all you need here as far as Texas law.

Same companies sell "hog" snares. However ya better be real careful of deer and calves getting in hog snares. Ive snared two pigs in my coyote setups this winter. For the life of me I still cant figure out how those pigs figured on getting under the wire as big as they were!

The way I read the state pamphlet is that Coyotes ARE NOT fur bearing, therefore the regulation saying you have to check the snare every 36 hours really doesn't apply (although it's not a bad idea).

You said it's a chain link fence... are you in or out of city limits? In city limits there 'may' be a legal issue, or a boo hoo bleading heart issue. The first couple of yotes are usually easy to catch.

PM me if you have any good BBQ goats for sale.

I am in the city limits on 22 acres. It is a 6 foot chain link fence that surrounds 15 acres of my land.

Your right, but since a snare affords an opportunity ,even with safe guards in the set, it's good to keep with the fur-bearing guidelines. Bottom line though, Snares are legal to take coyote.

I would contact your animal control, either city or county if HO doesn't have one. Being in the city limits can complicate things, better to know for sure.
