I have a ruger m77 .243 that is in need of a new or refinished stock. This is the older m77 with the tang safety. My dad bought it for me in the late 80's so it's got a lot of sentimental value to it. Any advice?

Plus I would buy me a synthetic to use on it for most of my hunting if I use the rifle a lot.

I would go synthetic. I have changed all my guns but one to them and I am changing that last one this year.

I refinished my old m77 from when I was a kid. It does not take very long or you could always buy a nice laminate. Boyd's gunstocks are always nice and are right around $100

For what it's worth, a gun with a refinished stock has much lower collector value.

Why does it need refinished? Is it all beat up? Nothing wrong with that.

I refinished a couple of stocks, one being a tang safety Ruger. Came out real nice. Wasn't that tough to do. I used a hand rubbed oil finish, though today I'd use a wiping varnish finish. As for resale, I don't plan to sell any of em anyway. Recently my Dad passed away and I have his tang safety Ruger Ultralight in 270. It's really beat up, but no way will I redo that stock. My Dad put every scratch on it, and it will remain as-is until the next generation gets it.

I would go with a new laminate stock that gives you the best of both worlds.
