I've been poking around with the idea of bedding the tang, front of the receiver and the recoil lug on my Howa (it's sitting in a pillar-bedded hogue stock), but I'm not 100% sure about the procedure for keeping compound away from the action screws since they screw into the bottom of the recoil lug.
Anyone have any experience with this?
(Yeah, I know a B&C would be about $200 - I just want to see if this barrel and action in this stock can be significantly improved with a minimal expenditure)

I bedded my Howa 1500 in 270, and it made the rifle more consistant. It was a full bed job. I also free floated the barrel in the process.

I'm not sure if the bedding compound would adhere to the hogue material.

I'm not sure if the bedding compound would adhere to the hogue material. The inside of the stock is fiberglass/polymer like most any synthetic stock. I would probably cut grooves into the channel around the recoil lug and/or drill a pattern of small diameter holes in the areas to receive bedding to improve the "adherence".

Just looking at the channel around the magazine well I'm not sure I have much room for compound there. It would be a really skinny skim if I did it at all...

That should work fine then also you might look into reinforcing the forend as they are notoriously flimsy.

I've heard of people putting arrow shafts in the forend and covering them with compound to stiffen them up, but that's probably a little overboard for my purposes. I find that the sporter contour barrel isn't heavy enough to cause the stock to contact the barrel from a rest or on a bipod unless maybe you had it severely canted. I can get it to touch by twisting at the wrist and the end of the forearm, but that just isn't a stress it would typically be subjected to in my hunting/shooting (unless maybe I was trying to stabilize the rifle with the sling).

It's a standard black synthetic stock that came on the rifle. I didn't bed it, I had it bedded. I think the stock was roughed up before bedding to help adhere to the stock.

Buy some all thread and lay down before pouring in the bedding compound in the forend.
