With all of this talk lately about the Ballistic Tips, what is your favorite round for a .270 when whitetail hunting?

I have not had any problems with my current round, but I am considering a change. I need to consider accuracy, knock down power, consistency, longer range capabilities, etc...

i've had great success and accuracy with 130gr ballistic tips in my 270 wsm. about the longest whitetail kill w/it for me was right at 175 yards, nice buck that dressed out around 135#, he was on a steady slow pace behind a doe and when I pulled the trigger he was on the ground now. I shot a black buck at about 250-270 yards that dropped like a rock as well, but there pretty small anyway. The nosler ballistic tips have been the most accurate round in my 270 wsm, it's a tikka t3, will easily shoot 1" moa with these

I shoot Hornady 140gr. BTSP. Never had a deer run a step with that round. More than 30 deer now. Granted more than half of those were shot in the neck, but I have confidence in the gun/round to take that shot.

I just went from bt's to the accucond, same look , 10grs heavier and more accurate than the bt's. Accubonds have some of the most "kill" from what ive read. I heard the tsx's are good but I couldn't get them to group and are a little harder to find over the counter.

IME, the plain ol' Winchester Power Points and Remington Core Lokts work great in the 270, and have done so for decades.

My Rem 700 in 270 likes the Federal Sierra Gameking in 150 grs

But this season I'm going to try the Nosler Partitions in 150 grs also Federal

There's an elk hunt in my future and I don't want to have to sight in my rifle for two different loads.

Federal Premium, 140 grain. Was given a box to try by a local gun shop years ago. Been using them ever since with great results.

my model 70 in 270 wsm likes the 135 sierra match kings with .25 inch groups at 100. I also shoot the 140 accubonds but they group around the .75 inch mark at 100, which is more than accurate enough on deer. Will probably try to shoot a hog or two next weekend with the SMK's to see how they do. If they don't do well then I'll take the accubonds to the stand with me this fall

Tommy: FWIW, Sierra does not recommend using Matchkings for hunting, even though they can be, as you discovered, very accurate. This is from Sierra's web page, FAQ's:

"Can I use a MatchKing bullet for deer hunting? They shoot just great in my rifle, so they should be just super for hunting use, right?

No, it's not recommended. The MatchKing bullets are designed for pinpoint accuracy; with no consideration given to what might happen after impact. If the bullet has arrived on target accurately, its job is done at that point. Hunting bullets must perform in a certain manner after impact. Penetrating ability, expansion characteristics, and even profile must be considered when designing a hunting bullet. Use MatchKings for matches, and game bullets for hunting."

the same can be said for the berger bullets, but they perform very well on deer sized game. Maybe I'll just switch to the bergers and call it a day.

At least Berger(the manufacturer) claims that their bullets work for hunting. The article that I read said they seem to penetrate a few inches and then expand rapidly. Have you had experience hunting with Bergers in your 270WSM? If so, how did they work? thanks

haven't loaded them up yet, have them sitting in the box still. I've been trying to go through the smk's before I get to them. I'll try to get some loaded up and shoot a hog with the smk, the berger, and the accubond to see the performance of each on a tough skinned animal.

destructive as hell, never had any thing move after taking a hit

My gripe with the tried and true rounds of yesterday, is the soft tip. My rifle doesnt feed anything with a soft tip without boogerin it up, and causing me to beleive it will impact the accuracy, further causing me to second gues a long shot that i know i have in the bag. I like a round with the polimer tip or any tip that will retain its shape until the bullet reaches its target. Other than that, i have killed a ton of deer with the soft lead tiped bullets, in fact i think they perform better. Which is to say theres more screwed up meat, and shorter blood trails. Been hunting deer almost 23 years now and still dont have a go to round. Skinner

skinner: there has been a lot of research which confirms that "boogered" (technical term) tips have no significant impact on accuracy. And the reduction in the
Ballistic coefficient is not significant either( at least within normal hunting ranges).

the effects at which most people would be shooting animals are minimal, but if you're taking 400-500 yard shots, then yes it would make a difference. You would still kill the deer it would just not be a very clean kill and could involve alot of tracking

Thouest art a smart ---. Dont mind bowhunting for hogs or bowhunting dureing October, but if its rifle season, a rifle will be in the stand. Lesson learned the hard way. Sk
