How long can you leave a hog in a trap and it still be ok. Just wondering if can set the trap on a Thursday and check it on Sunday. Or do I need to check it daily?
It's a 4'x4'x8' trap.
Thanks.

I'd check it daily. Thinking the hogs might be in bad shape if you caught any on the first night and didn't check for 3 days. Maybe not as bad during the winter but summer I'm betting they'd be dead.

Do you have a water tub in there for them?

Winter time you can get away with it for about 3 days without water. Summer time they will be dead by noon.

I like to check mine daily. U might get away with it when its cool out but you run the chance of them jackin up your trap. I used to leave one set with a feeder on it all the time and my gauger would call me if I caught anything. Im gonna start doin that again soon.

I appreciate the help y'all. Just put a trap out a couple of weeks ago and have the door tied up hoping that they'll get used to going in it. I went out Saturday night and set it, but got nothing. The place that I'm on is not overrun with pigs but they seem to show up every few weeks for a couple of nights. I was just curious if I could increase my odds of getting them by leaving the trap set for a few days at a time.

I have seen them die in a trap in 24 hrs when it's hot. The last thing you want to do is drag a dead, bloated, stinky hog out of a trap. Trust me

if its in the shade and your trap si bug enough to put a water tub in it, you can get a way with waiting a little longer

Temperature is definately the key issue. If it's hot they die pretty quick. Cooler temp's they last longer. Have tried holding them from catch last night till the next eavening late by getting water to them, before noon, but I think the stress sometimes has something to do with it. 10-4 on the dead stinking bloated removal. Now I just kill them and dispose of them when I catch them. Much better that way.

Regular baiting is important. The best thing I know is to set a feeder over one and wrap something around it that causes most of the corn to drop directly into the trap. Having a game camera will tell you if the hogs are entering the trap or if you're wasting your time because nothing is showing up.

Those are the two main things I know to do., but I'd be happy to hear other things that folks have found that work for them.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

If your weather is like east Texas then you have to check daily..could be three different extremes round these parts lol. If your lucky like me then your aunt could check em for you daily cause they are on her land smile but honestly if you have regular cattle panel traps I'd check em daily just because I've had em get only their head out of the trap and couldn't get it out so they either got strangled to death and/or over heated from tryin to get free. I'm getting a cellular cam soon so I will know for certain when to check my traps. Good luck
