Ok guys So I need a new scope to put on my new 30-06. I want for lack of better terms a MULTI-RETICLE to put on it. I want to be able to shoot at 200,300, and maybe even 400. I dont do any competitive shooting, it will just be for my kids and I to deer and hog hunt..I don't need anything special just want the different yardages. I don' want to get crazy with money on this. Will do cash and also I have some gun trades I might be able to throw at you. If you have something or even ideas please let me know.

My best advice would be to sight it in at the distance you are most likely to shoot at, perhaps that is 200 yards. Then learn the hold over for the 100 and 300 yard shots.

For instance, If you sighted it in for zero at 200 yards then you might be 1.5" high at 100 yards and 7" low at 300.
Practice at the range shooting those 300 yard shots holding the center 6-7" high on the target.

You might want a Mil-Dot reticle but you still need to learn how to range your target and the value of the hold over for each dot at different ranges.

Something with a Mil reticle. Learning how to range involves pushing a button on a laser range finder.

www.jbmballistics.com/trajectory

It will give you your trajectory in Mils. You need your bullet's ballistic coefficient, average muzzle velocity, grain weight of the bullet, diameter, zero range, conditions when zeroing, ect. It will give you a chart you can copy and paste to Excel and it will either be very close or right on the money. Shoot what it tells you, write down what happened good, bad or indifferent and, if needed manipultate the BC or MV in jbm to make calculated trajectory match what you observed as field trajectory.

it will just be for my kids

putting a lot of whiz bang reticle in front of kids can be confusing.

.30-06 shoots flat just past 200 yards

I'm with Railhead. The Burris FFII 4.5-14 with Ballistic Plex is a very decent scope. I've got a couple of them. I rate the Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 as a better scope, but it's also twice the price. With the Burris, sight the rifle in at 200. If you have about 3000 fps MV, the first dot is 300 and the second dot is 400. That will vary a bit with caliber and bullet, but it's pretty close (and Burris provides a lot of data with the scope to help you with the BDC dots, calibers, and range). I put that second dot on a pig a couple of months ago. He was, per the rangefinder, at 400 yards. He went down like he was hit with a truck (actually hit with a 260 Rem). But, since we are spending YOUR money, that Leupold VXIII in 4.5-14 with the varmint hunter or B&C reticles is mighty nice.

If youre going to do that to your kids make sure you get one with very good eye relief.

I'll tell you what, after this weekend I'm a pretty big fan of the Nikon BDC. I was able to easily hit all 5 shoots on a man size torso steel target at 400 and 1 out of 3 shoots on an 8" circle at 400 yards. All i did was zero my 243 at 100yds and simply followed the BDC circles.
of course this is not good enough for precision target shooting but it was easy and very straight forward.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I have no experience with the Horus Vision scopes or reticles, I just think the concept is really cool and their internet demo game is pretty fun.

Bucsfan69 has a Nikon buckmaster 4-14 with the bdc reticle for sale.

At least he did a few weeks ago, may still have it.

I have the same scope with the nikoplex reticle and for the money its hard to beat.
