Yes there is a bowhunters educatiin course and some places, I believe Hagerman is one of them, you have to obtain this certification in order to hunt.

But for normal deer lease type bowhunting, no, you don't need it. It's a good course though and if you plan to hunt Alaska or some other places someday you will need it.

Go to TPWD site or Hagerman and I believe there were some courses scheduled.

You don't HAVE to attend Bowhunters Ed to hunt most places in Texas. It is a good idea to go take the course though.

They cover a lot of good practical knowledge, and I enjoyed it. I didn't take it until a couple of years ago; I started bowhunting about 20 years ago, and I still learned quite a bit.

Lots of other states require Bowhunter Ed, so if you plan to travel and hunt, it's a very good idea to go ahead and take the class.

The guy who owns this place gave the class I took. There is an online portion then he does the mandatory classroom portion and the shooting qualification.

I have a field day only scheduled at Lake Whitney State Park, 23 Feb 2013. You will need to have the online course completed and bring your field day qualifier. 8:30am-2:30pm. 817-223-2839

Do they make you shoot through a 5" hole in a steel plate?

Here in Colo they ask your effective range at the beginning of class then when it comes time for your efficiency test they make you screw on a BH and shoot at your effective range. The show offs that said 60+ yards always get all butt hurt when they find that out.

Some of the instructors have an iron maiden, personally I don't use one.

We didn't shoot a steel plate but we did have shots past 35 yards. We also did some fun shots over 50.

Bowhunters Ed is the best thing that I've done since I started bowhunting. Took mine at Big O's in Sherman.

I believe we have an ethical obligation as hunters to put our game down as quickly and effectively as possible. The course brings to light a lot of things we never really think about that will help us do exactly that. No the course itself will not make you a skilled bowhunter. But it will give you the basic tools that you need to begin honing your skills and become a much better and safer hunter.
