I went out Wed/Thurs, mainly looking to stick a pig with my bow. I found plenty of hog sign, but never saw a pig. I saw 1 mature WT Doe that I spooked while walking a trail.

I am not used to hunting such dense woods, and I can't figure out how to hunt these heavily wooded areas effectively.

Any advice for hunting hogs on public land in these thick wooded river bottoms? I am having alot of trouble figuring out where to set up. I don't have a tree climber - maybe Santa will bring me one, so I mainly set up a brush blind around me with fallen/dead brush.

The woods are so thick, I am not seeing obvious pinch points or travel corridors for deer or pigs. I found what I thought was a perfect spot - recent hog sign, massive wallows, rooting along the edges, low spot in the ground holding 6" deep water - probably 100' long and 40' across - off of the trails, with alot of pig footprints. I sat there all day, saw nothing.

I'm not looking for a spot, or even a specific WMA, just some advice on bowhunting tactics on these swampy WMA's - especially since you can't bait!

Thanks!

Greg

Oh, and no offense to the duck hunters that were there, but their firing round after round at quackers probably did not help calm the game. I know they have as much right to the area as I do, so I'm not complaining, but I bet it didn't help things.

Look a little more, the whole place isnt that thick, there are open areas.

Im thinking some kind of tree stand will be your friend, gonna be hard to get close enough to stuff in a brush ground blind to be successful with a bow.

good luck.

I went there once to pig hunt. Same issue as you. Thick woods, plenty of sign, no hogs. They might be nocturnal I was thinking. There was a THF'er who seem to have lots of luck there with hogs. I forget his THF name. But he posted pics on hogs shot there. It got me interested so I made the trip awhile back...I'm talking years ago. Never did see one.

i normally have pretty good luck on the west side of OSB with hogs. the "channel trail" has produced several pigs for me. The "River trail" is pretty good too.

got one a couple of years ago with my kiddos. ton of sign but everything was nocturnal. got this sucker just as the sun was coming up with daughters 22mag.

have been there a couple of other times but saw/heard nothing.

way too much traffic.

its fun anyways.

some times it just a matter of being in right spot at right time, i'd blame it on the timing.. 5,727 acres of land is big area compaired to 100'long bye 40'across.. have sat for days & days in tree stand with farther field of view with out seeing deer or hogs, then boom, start seeing em.. if ya not out their ya not gonna see em.. every hour spent increases your odds.. i'd be out their again.. up
