Hey friends,

I will be going on my first hog hunt in a week or so, I am using an outfitter close to home. Hog hunting at night, what do i wear? Also, should I bring a handgun, in case i get charged?

Best to ask the outfitter what you need. Not likely to get charged unless you corner them. Onb clothes wear normal stuff you wear hunting, at night who cares what you where

Dress for the weather. I wear a 1911, less for risk of being charged, more for administering a coup de grace if the pig is down but still kicking. A 45 in the ear stops the kicking.

"Also, should I bring a handgun, in case i get charged?"

I never leave home without one. The only question is "which one?"

Thanks guys, you've answered my questions. I'll probably go next week. I'll post pics later.

I'd bring extra warm stuff. The weather's been crazy at night around here and nothing sucks more than having animals in front of you and not being able to shoot cause you're shivering so bad.

Warm clothes, extra bullets and a bowie knife, Or your handy dandy 1911. Not cool to leave one squealing in pain.

One last question about bullet selection. Hollow point or fmj. I will be shooting .223. I have heard pros and cons for both. Thoughts.

What size hogs? HP's don't even stun a big boar. The shield will stop most bullets that expand good. I prefer .44 Mag. FMJ will get through but you may need a few good hits to get him down unless you put one in the brain or spine. Enjoy yourself and know where everybody is all the time. Don't want anyone hurt.

I'll be safe. Tomorrow it'll just be me and my guide, he knows it's my first hunt, but also proficient in firearms... And safety... I'll also have my. 40 as a backup.

i use 75 or 68 GR hollow points all the time on pigs with my 223...just try to keep your shots under 200 yards and you'll be fine....one shot kills are not hard to do with a 223

If it is a night hunt, how can't it be without light. Of course you should wear a headlamp to free your hands and shoot...Handgun is a must!

Stay hungry.
