me and one of the lease members just went half on an ATN night vision scope for a dedicated NV-upper. He completely ruined our deer season. I never saw a deer at a feeder with my own two eyes. Matter of fact, I can count on one hand the total deer that I saw all year. Just happened to have gotten lucky one morning and left the blind early (ticked off because when the sun came up, I realized... my feeder is destroyed) and caught a glimpse of 2 deer just as they bedded down from, literally, about a mile away and made the stalk of my life. Ended up being a very old (one side of his teeth looked like a 5 year old, the other side they were all cracked/busted/or just missing) 10 past his prime and a doe. I took that buck and one other guy shot a doe. Other than that, we got skunked!

Doesn't look like your pen was made out of hog panels. Looks like it might have been made out of mesh wire off of a roll. Stretch a line of barb wire all the way around it level with the ground. That way if he starts trying to root under it he will get a nose full of barbs. Then put up your 16ft wide by 3 ft tall hog panels. I usually make mine 36x36 so the corn doesn't sling outside of the pen to get them wanting more. It's about $25 per panel, but well worth it when you start seeing deer again and still probably cheaper than night vision. I will say night vision hunting sounds a lot more fun than driving t-posts.

I would not go after that hog with a 223. I like 12 ga slug on big hogs.

338ultra is dead on. You can kill this one, but you can't kill all of them. We use hog panel or similar gauge mesh and bend the bottom out 90 degrees before we t-post them to keep them from getting their snouts under it. We've seen piglets wiggle through but only vary rarly in the last 10 years. You gotta keep them out.
Sorry for your pig problem. He would look good on your wall. Good luck.

I don't sell these; but I can't say enough about how much I like them: Capsule Wildlife Feeder. I've had one five years and I'm about to buy two more. I have both setups, being some with traditional barrel feeders with hog panels around them and I have the one Capsule. When you add up wasted feed($10.00+ a bag) and then put value on your time, there is no other way to go in my opinion. By the time you have bought a barrel feeder with timer, solar panel, coon cage, and hog panels/t posts, wire you have spent almost as much as the Capsule would cost. When you use this feeder, you just simply set it out on the ground and fill it up. It requires no panels to protect it, and that hog won't be able to do anything other that eat the corn it throws out. I've found that I get mature bucks to feed at my capsule much faster that my other feeders when I've set up a new location. My theory is they don't have to get comfortable with being inside a pen and having a feeder above their head.

That's crazy. I would also try taller legs (and stake them down) so the hogs can't reach the spinner / tip the feeder. Downside is it makes it harder to fill the feeders because you have to hike the feed up a ladder.

You can kill that hog. I would start trapping also. With the combo of both killing and trapping you can put a major dent in them. Are there any livestock on the ranch?
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I would go to winch up feeders that are staked in the ground and then put up some hog panels.

Dang that's a big hog.
NV question. How good are the optics? How much more is thermal, or do they even make such?

This WAS our destroyer!!! He would dig out under one pole until the feeder fell. Got three of them before I got him.

HwyMan, I gave that place up to NightBird. I believe that yall met and even went on a hog hunt together this year. This is up in Kent County just North of the Oxy-salt creek plant.
Guys, this is my first real experience with hogs. My buddy has a few few in Glasscock, but they come and go and haven't really done much in the way spooking deer. He's got a couple capsules, those things are pretty cool. I however, am on a pretty tight budget. I have about 20 of those feeders exactly like the one on the ground, been using the same feeders for my entire hunting career (these feeders will see their 20th season in 2013-2014).
As far trapping, the lease actually came with traps for our use,as well as a few old winch up feeders on hhang-men and all the elevated box blinds. Don't know how long they have been out there, but I learned real quick that if you fill the barrel, winch it up, the rust old hang-man pole snaps. My brand new f150 almost got hit by one of the poles (and me too). Really scared me, so I brought some of my feeders down and set them up. All the permenant feeder/blind locations were set up way too close for comfort for me anyways (40-60 yards). As for the traps, we set a few, and they never caught anything. They have been there for a long time, it was like the pigs knew exactly what was going on.

Sour your corn then add apple scented minerals like buck candy.... put that in your trap gets them everytime.

As for the NV, if I remember we purchased an ATN MK390? It's just a Gen2, says it'll only reach to 75yards w/o a moon, but 300 with ambient moonlight. On midway it was 500-somethin I think, not sure. My buddy Rooster just told me, "f-it, if you'll pitch in 200, I'll order in and turn an upper into a dedicated NV rig".
Thermal is rediculously expensive.
On a side note, this lease will be up for grabs next year if anyone is interested. We had pictures of some GREAT bucks on this place and this year was the first that it had EVER been leased. Was previously only hunted by the owner. It's a beautiful place that's a little over 1000 acres that's almost exclusively creek bottom, comes with 6 elevated box blinds, 6 super-short feeder setups(40-60 yards or so) and even has a 4 bed travel trailer for your use. We paid $2375 each for 4 hunters.
Hunters to the North are like-minded hunters that are all about management and to the north of them is another ranch operated by a friend of mine (Crooked Wing Outfitters) and is likewise managed. 140-160 deer are not uncommon in this area with the chance at some real brutes.

Here's the one old-man buck harvested off the place this year (by me thankfully). Most fullfilling stalk I've ever made, especially since I spotted him from the other end of the ranch and watched him bed down, then drove the other side of the ranch the long way around, praying that I could find the location he bedded again. Really wish someone else would been there to watch it, or at least take a picture of me with him.
