It was a long season and we spent a lot of time in the blind in November/December without seeing a single thing. After probably 12 days of 3 hour mornings and nights in the blind, I could tell my little guy was getting pretty bored and frustrated with the whole thing. That all changed a couple of weekends ago when we went out for our last weekend at the lease (2 weeks before the end of the season).

His first deer was a doe that he dropped in her tracks with a high shoulder shot at 125 yards. Before and after the shot, I don’t know who was shaking more, me or him. The gun is a Weatherby Vanguard S2 243 in a Blackhawk Axiom stock and he shot her on Sunday night just before dark.

Since we didn’t get out there until late Saturday night, we had planned to hunt Monday morning and skip a day of school. Well, we get up Monday morning at 5:30 and it was probably 29 degrees outside. Since we shot the doe the night before, I asked him if he wanted to hunt again and he said no, he wanted to sleep in. Given the temperature, that was fine by me. Well, an hour later, he wakes up and decides he wants to go out after all. So we get dressed, head to the blind and around 8:30, this guy shows up not 10 feet from where he dropped the doe the night before. Since this was his first year hunting, I wasn’t going to let him shoot a buck. However, after being shut out time after time in November/December, I figured he had already learned the lesson that deer just don’t just show up every time you get in the blind. So I told him to go for it. 125 yard double lung shot. The buck ran about 25 yards before he dropped.

To say my 7 year old was excited would be an understatement.

Thanks,
Rich

No kidding. What a great buck and doe. That is AWESOME. It sounds like y'all earned 'em too. That will teach him well.

Congratulations to your son!

When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible.
