I've had 2 Rossi a .223 and a .243. I still have the .223 for the kids, but couldn't get rid of the 243 fast enough. It wouldn't stay sighted in at all, even with different scopes and new rings. I could have just got a lemon though. The .223 is a tac driver.
In general Rossi are cheap made guns. I'd consider a better quality gun around the same price range. Mossberg 100atr's are cheap, but better quality than rossi's. The new atr's have fluted barrels and accur-triggers, not a bad gun for the price really

My brother in law bought this same set up for my nephew. As mentioned above, the .243 just wouldn't pattern. They tried numerous combos of ammo and scope. Nothing worked.
I'm about to start looking for a youth model for my boy. I'm going to spend a little more and get something he can keep and pass down to his kids one day.

There's inexpensive, and there's cheap. Rossi is cheap.

'nuff said, thanks for the feedback, will keep looking. Familyman; we are just starting our hunting adventures. We'll be spending a lot of time at the range then move to varmits then on to bigger game. Going to enter her in the Texas Youth Hunting Program. Bass Pro has a Remington single shot .22 for $119, thought I'd get her that and a youth 20 gauge to start and a .243 a little later.
I'm a complete novice to hunting myself so I'm on a learning curve.

I would recommend the CVA, mid-break single shot Stalker sold through Academy with Begara barrels. They have these in .243, 7MM-.08, youth models. I personally have the 7MM-08 and it shoots fairly accurately. With a limbsaver through on the end, it has very little recoil and I am 3 for 3 on shots (hog, turkey, coyote). Every one has hit where I aimed out to 100 yards..

I had the same experience with the Rossi .243 as the guys above. Shot terribly.

I have the rossi .223 and it has been a great gun. I also shot the 20 guage and it was pretty good. Don't know about any other calibres. The .22 might be ok though.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

That's what was weird, the lil .223 is a heck of a shooter, but that 243 was a piece. I seriously thought about throwing it in the trash til some poor guy traded me a youth 20 gauge for it.

The main problem with these Rossi's is the trigger. You can get them to shoot really well if you get the pull down to 3 lbs or less, but that's not really a good idea for shotgunning or youth use in general. Light triggers and kids = more accidental discharges.
If your concern is budget.. get a used 20 ga auto loader and a Savage bolt gun in .243 and the kiddo's will be much better off in the long run.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

my father bought my son his first deer rifle a rossi 243 this year. we could not ever get it sighted in. we also changed rings and scopes aswell. IMO do not buy one! they are a waste of money. Yes they are cheap, and in this case, YOU GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I think dkershen got it right. The trigger pull does suck. Even with the .223 as well as it shoots it took a little while to get used to the heavy trigger pull but once I did it was great. Even my buddy said that. The .223 and the 2o guage is all we messed with though. My stepdaughter is pretty good with the .223 once she learned how to squeeze the trigger.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I had the .223 in the youth model that I bought with the intention of being a truck gun until my son got old enough and then it would be his first deer gun. Never could get the thing sighted in. Would get it on zero, take it to the field, miss a doe, take it to the range, be way off. Did this three times with 2 different reload rounds and three different factory rounds. Got rid of it first chance I had. I won't own another.
