was under the impression that a inertia gun would have less recoil than a gas gun? or is the inertia gun more reliable on cycling?

Gas is softer on your shoulder, both are reliable at cycling as long as they are relatively clean. Inertia is generally easier to clean when it needs it, I have an inertia gun that needs to be cleaned more often than my gas gun, but since it's easier I don't mind.

Typically inertia guns require way less cleaning than gas guns. As dave points out that might not always be the case...but of course the use of the guns in question also majorly factor into that.

My inertia gun kicks less and stays way cleaner than my gas gun. Like Dave said my inertia gun is a breeze to clean as well, therefore I take good care of it.

Personal preference.

Neither kicks hard compared to a pump.

Cleaning a shotgun is only as hard as you make it. cool

For waterfowl hunting, inertia wins hands down. They require less cleaning and are far less prone to jamming. Carbon, dirt, ice, etc. seem to affect inertia guns less. If you're going to shoot 100+ rounds for clays, then a gas gun makes more sense.

Doubt inertia wins hands down unless that's all you shot. I have a Beretta Xtrema 2 and I promise you that it goes up against a Benelli any day. I can go 100 rounds plus without cleaning. I have had it wet and sandy and never failed once.

Hunted with a group of guys in Canada, 2 guys had brand new SBE2's they had only shot clays with them. They had issues the whole trip. 2 other guys had extrema 2's and I have a maxus. None of us had issues. My gun had never been shot at that time, and still to this day has never once jammed, that's cleaning it one time a year after bird season is over. I'de go gas all the way, and def don't be afraid of the maxus, I've been more than pleased with mine.

My Benelli has never jammed, I've seen plenty of jams on xtremas. Now what?

Gas is a softer kicking gun

Inertia is cleaner, end of story

I shot a beretta gas gun along with my benelli and I can't tell a difference in the kick, not really paying attention when I'm watching ducks fall I guess.

Any of these guns jam, if you get the "lemon". I have one friend that had an SBE jam over and over. Went to the factory for repair, twice. Never could fix it. Hate to say it but he just traded it off and got a Beretta A400 this season. So far, he is very happy. But, pick a gun, and some fellow has had problems with it somewhere.

Shooting an Xtrema2 myself. No issues whatsoever, even when temps drop into single digits. I've shot an SBEII and, IMO, that had more recoil than the X2.

Just pick the one that fits you the best and go with it.

Unless you are shooting 3.5" who notices recoil anyway? If you go to the range any shooting a whole lot, you are usually using light loads.
There is very small chance you can get a "lemon" with any of the quality guns. The big question is how does the manufacturer handle it and is the problem reoccurring through the model line. Just like cars/trucks.

I agree with both statements here. If you are clay shooter and shooting 100s of rounds a day then yeah I think recoil could start to be a factor...but then again many of those guys shoot over and unders and those beat you more than any semiauto. Bottom line is recoil is not an issue when hunting for 95% of people. For those that it is there are tricks you can do to lower felt recoil like adding weight to the gun, bigger pads, and lighter loads.

I own both; and both work fine if you keep them clean. Quail hunt witn a Browning A5 and duck hunt with a SBE II. Both have had hundreds of shells shot through them w/o issues, except rare occasions. In those cases, it's my fault for not keeping them clean. Net: go with what you are more comfortable shooting.

I've shot just about everything out there.

Inertia vs gas is low on my list for deciding on what shotgun to buy. It just doesn't make much difference in the end game performance.

With the new style butt stocks I'm sure you can soften the recoil of any type shotgun. Berretta has one they claim reduces it by 70%.
All I know is I teal hunted with my 20 gauge Ultralite Benelli shooting 3" #4 Heavyshot, Kicked like a mule, but again, didn't feel it till after the duck fell.

My maxus went well over a 1000 rounds before I had to take it a part and deep clean it...even a deep clean took less the 10mins. That includes using a stainless steel dermal brush to clean and polish all the surfaces.

As far as recoil in auto vs inertia..via. physics it pretty clear...now if you can tell that much difference I doubt it.

I prefer gas and always have. I have a Beretta 300a that over thirty years old and still cycles flawlessly. ..and its been put through the ringer

This exactly. I have 6 different Beretta gassers, and all function flawlessly and require cleaning about HALF as often as my Benelli. I've owned two Benellis, and both are nice guns are they're extremely easy to clean, BUT they require cleaning FAR more often than my Berettas. The gassers kick less, but there's not enough difference to really matter, IMHO.

I suppose that's possible for certain POS gassers. Definitely NOT the case with Berettas, though. My SBE2 is FAR more temperamental to cold and dirt/dust than any of my gassers.
