My grandson wants to go spring turkey hunting, my question is what gauge and brand shot gun would be good for him. Thinking about getting him a shot gun for his birthday. Oh and he's also shots left handed. He's a great shot with his 243 deer rife (got three deer this season).

Took a left handed youngster hunting a few years ago that got 2 mature gobblers with his 20ga youth 870 and the factory full choke. Did have him shooting Remington HD 3 inch #6 shot. First bird was shot at 15 yards the other at 42 yards. 2 shots 2 dead turkey. Inside 40 yards what I have seen from patterning my 20 gauge and that load it is good to go to 40 yards for sure.

Yup, same here. My kiddo shoot the Rem 870 youth 20g. The only difference is we use the turkey choke. Inside 40 and you're fine.

Mossberg, Remington, HR, any of those make a nice lil pump. If you don't wanna break the bank you could go with the single shot option. I grew up on one. Loved it.

I do and will continue to hunt with one of the best shotguns ever made, Remington 1100, 12 ga., 2 3/4"...40 years old and still shooting like brand new. A great upland and trap shooting gun too...

Good Story: I always was a 12 gauge 3" nitro with jellyhead choke. One time I showed up early to scout for a buddy that was coming to kill his first spring gobbler. When I took out scouting within in 50 feet I got rattled at and killed a 3' coiled ready to go diamond back. Next morning when we went out I grabbed a 20 gauge semi with some #4 steel in case of snakes. Well I called in 2 big 10" toms. Needless to say all I had was that stinking 20. And at 30 yards it will DRT as well as any 12 I have shot turkey with. I would say any 20 qauge in youth or that fits is gonna work.

Just started youth hunting and outdoor club in dallas.

I LOVE the rem 1100 in a 12ga but have to admit - way to heavy for youth to carry around in the field.

pre-teen & teens seem to like Weatherby 20ga best - bought it here on THF

weight of the gun seems to make bigger difference to kids than the amount of recoil but that is just their opinion.

Browning BPS in 20 gauge would be perfect for a lefty. Its really all about what he learns with. My son is a lefty and has shot right handed guns from age 4-14, and recently got a left handed bolt rifle. Said it felt funny to him at first, but loves it now. 20 gauge 3'' #6 worked great for his first turkey.

I just picked up a Browning BPS 20 gauge tonight for him. Looks like a really nice gun, bottom ejection will work for either a left or right handed shooter. I'm giving it to him for his birthday next month, I'm sure he will like it. He dying to go turkey hunting.

Good choice for him. Solid shotguns and the 20 with good shells will take a turkey very well. The Remington HD #6 work very well in mine with factory full choke and have no issue using it to 45 yards on a bird. Good luck this season

We have found that a 20 ga. gas operated automatic is the best for young hunters as it has a lot less recoil, especially when using 3" magnum shells.
We bought our grandson a Remington 1187 youth version and use a extra full turkey choke and it has worked great. The smaller stock, length of pull, makes it fit him well and not much kick
