Miss that whole area. I used to live South of Roswell in Artesia. My mom worked for Allsups as a district supervisor and opened the Allsups in Cloudcroft. I remember getting gas one night around 3:00 and I saw this really big black dog coming to me, boy I was surprised when it got about 25 yards away because the dog was a bear!!!! The store had an air horn when the bears would come in that they used to scare them back out.

My brother (who lives here) said that the Apaches are continually clearing under brush and using controlled burns to maintain their forests. The reservation forests, as a whole, look completely different than the National Forests outside of the Reservation. It's very obvious once you look closely.

Thanks, Glad to hear they are taking care of the resource. If you need a great map of back road and trails, stop in at the BLM office in Ruidoso and pick one up ($5). Surprising how many great back road there are. We used to dirt bike all over Cloudcroft and there are some very primative road that take you out to the edge of Tularosa drop off.. Amazing over view of Almagordo.
Love to see some more pictures. cheers

Great country and the people match the land, can't wait to get back out there. From the pictures I know I've been away too long. Thanks for jarring the memories back to life.

OK, final report. We got home about 7pm last night. We opted to save Roswell for the drive home and went to Three Rivers Petroglyphs instead. It's due west of Sierra Blanca and in between Tularosa and Carrizozo. It's also due east of the Trinity Site on the White Sands Missile Range.

Very cool hiking trail onto a hill that's covered with more than 21,000 ancient petroglyphs. I'll post a few pics here.

Sierra Blanca with a fire watch tower. This would make a nice deer blind. This is looking west from above Ruidoso.

This is the road to the petroglyphs. That's Sierra Blanca from the west side looking east.

It can get really hot on that desert. Personally, I'd opt for a cooler time of year. If you got to the petroglyph site early or late in the day it might not be so bad. Mid-day in summer it could be well north of 100 degrees though.

It was in the 50's while we were there but once the sun went down it quickly dropped into the 30's.

And all of the literature and signs around the park indicate a strong presence of rattlesnakes.
