Excellent choice, JD, and congrats! The new Model 70s are what every rifle wishes it could be---all the right features in a very well-made package!

If you haven't messed with the trigger adjustment already you'll find the MOA trigger to be VERY acceptable but I'll tell you right now: it will respond beautifully to an "Ernie-the-Gunsmith" spring. I urge you to get one and install it. It would be about the best six bucks you ever spent on a rifle.

Thanks for the suggestion on the trigger spring River Rider. I just ordered one from Ernie and will get my Gunsmith to install it when he mounts the scope.

beautiful rifle! I'm a sucker for wood stocks...although I'm leaning towards composite for my next deer rifle!

I think the stock design and checking is just great on that gun.

I was lucky, the last year that the original plant was in operation, I was able to pick up a 270 in the FW HG. Its in the closet right now, still in the wrapper. My plan was to give it to my daughter as a gift...I bought it the day before she was born.

I looked at the reciept, I paid about 700 for that one, the new ones are nearly twice that amount.

Beautiful gun, enjoy, congrats. I'm thinking about a 25-06, started a recent thread on my options. Winchester shows the m70 feather weight as only 22" barrel. Any comments on 22" vs 24" barrel length for 25-06? Was length a factor in your selection?

I think the 22 inch barrel will work fine for a deer hunting gun out to 300 yards. I guess a longer barrel might be better at super long ranges but I am no expert. When I saw this gun on Gunbroker, I could not resist. I love the classic lines of the Featherweight Model 70 and when I saw the red "Old School" recoil pad I had to have it smile

One reason I chose the 70 Sporter was to get the 24-inch barrel and I happen to like the classic-style stock better. Two inches of barrel probably is worth 60 to 80 fps in this cartridge, but the truth is it probably would never matter. For the extra velocity I'll get with an additional two inches of barrel, I'll still need to know the range to target and trajectory of my bullet just as well as you do out to about 300 yards and beyond.

Thanks for all the comments! I ordered my Talley Lightweights and Leupold VX-6 2-12x42mm scope today. Looking forward to getting the scope mounted and taking it to the range to see how it shoots smile

Tried out my new "Dream" Deer Rifle after Thanksgiving on a hunt down in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The rifle is a shooter, my son Frank shot two does and his personal best buck with it and his buddy Jeff shot a doe with the rifle. So far the gun is four for four. Could not be happier with the rifle!

Nice buck and nice gun! I want one of those in the 30-06, and the Coyote Light version in 22-250. One day...
