I've seen it once, and heard of a few more. It's not fun to watch, but they get over it. I don't think there's a cure.

Yes, I've seen a few hounds over the years have fits.

I knew some folks with a Malamute..Husky..Norwegian Elkhound..some sort of wolfy-looking dog that had them. It is one of the most unnerving things I'd ever seen or heard.

Know a lab that has them occasionally. A vet can give you meds to help with the issue. If the dog has convulsions, just keep it away from objects that it can hit and injure itself on. If you can, just physically protect it from hitting them. Don't try to hold the dog so it can't move, just allow the convulsions to slowly subside.

Yes, had a liver and white male that had them. First time I saw this I thought he had been bit by something, never had seen anything that would resemble this action before Scared me, after about 30 mins he was ok. He would have them after he would hunt for a couple hours. No cure, that I found.

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Some people claim its from low blood suger and give them a treat high in suger beforehand
No not mine. But I am glad I am aware it can happen to minimize the shock that would hit me if they did

We have had it happen to several of our dogs. It usually happens around mid season when the dogs start getting thin. We started mixing honey with their feed in the mornings. Since then no more problems.

We have a black and tan dachshund that has them. Use him for rabbits, train himself didn't have to do much. Went fishing one day and he was running through weeds chasing rabbits. On the way home had his first seizure. Pretty scary experience for him and us. Looked terrified. Went to vet and he said it can be caused by allergies. Only had a couple since then. We just try to comfort him and let it run its course

I have a Catahoula mix who has epilepsy. Have run thyroid, etc and have found no causes. It's horrible and scary and theres very little you can do. Vets will prescribe meds to dogs who have them often or in clusters. Changing their diet and providing exercise can help some. Have heard avoid peanut butter and rosemary in epi dogs. There are several online groups and websites with a huge amount of helpful information and support.

it just happened to me two days ago. My yellow lab had one. I did some research and found that several things can cause a one time seizure like dehydration or even if they ate some chocolate, but that if it continues to happen then there might be issue that they need to be put on meds.

I have had two dogs; one pointer one lab that had these type seisurs. They would stagger around and sometimes fall over and get stiff. After a few minutes they would be OK. Some vets say it is a low sugar problem. Some type of sugar or candy will help (not chocolate) Good luck db

I've had my Dachshund have a seizure after he was in the yard. He must've inhaled ant poison. He just had the one and never again. If dogs just have one, often times its something they got into...either a chemical, plant, food, etc. You can give them a spoon of honey or even vanilla ice cream to get help their blood sugar up.

We had a Brittany that was sired by Am.Fld.Ch/AFC/FC Chubasco II that we kept going for nine years with idiopathic epilepsy. He had grandmals that would get him down for several days. The siezures were cyclic in they would happen about every 8-9 months. We gave him daily doses of Potassium Bromide and Phenobarb.
The last time I checked, the University of Missouri Vet School in Columbia had calculated that nearly 26% of the breeds in sporting group were positive for epilepsy.
It is a very sad condition to deal with.
And Rose...I promise I haven't forgotten about photos of the Roo Man. Sandi and I will make some tomorrow and send them to you. We delivered Cash to Sharon & Wynn Wilkerson yesterday...He will be travelling to Florida with UNO to go back on the circuit with Aaron.

Many Brittany lines have epilepsy behind them. It's a tricky disease because there's really no way to test for it. You just know if its there when a dog starts seizing. :-/
Thanks! I look forward to the photos. :-)

I saw a young pointer pup stiffen up and fall over once and then begin kicking its stiffened legs, just like it had been shot with a rifle. Whole incident lasted less than a minute, I am thinking. I had that pup for several months after that incident and never saw him seize like that again until he was run over by a vehicle and killed.
I have had a couple of dogs since that began to wobble, and could barely stand, much less move, after being hunted hard. Always figured the latter condition had to do with low blood sugar. Have been told the former condition could have been triggered by the same condition. An old vet taught me to carry a jar of peanut butter for such occasions. Putting a little on a stick, and wiping it on the roof of their mouth until they can start licking it off the stick seems to help.

My mom's lab has them occasionally. Vet gave a medicine that is supposed to help reduce them, and it seems to have helped quite a bit.

My chocolate lab has them about once a month. I've got some medicine for him, but after a long weekend at the ranch they seem to flair up. The vet says he has epilepsy. They are scary to watch but he seems fine afterward. The vet said that chocolates are more prone to them since there was so much inbreeding to get them to their color.

Had a lab/retreiver mix that had seizures-he was a great dog. We put him on meds, but the seizures still happened relatively frequently. It can be tough on the owner to watch the dog go through it--but I can tell you that he still loved life and kept trucking through them no matter how often they came.
Just watch out for his diet if you put him on meds--makes them go eating-crazy. It got to the point where he'd take food off our plates while we were eating and hunting down geese in the land behind the neighbors...lol
