Mineral blocks might help. Best thing though is good timely rains and range conditions that are not over grazed with plenty of diversity on plants.

I know our property is far from over grazed and we have a pretty good diversity of plants... Would a food plot help?

a food plot wouldn't hurt, but there's not much you can plant that they won't really be getting in the pasture (depending on how much rain you get). If you really want to build them up, go with the protein feeders.

One of the things we all tend to forget, we are going into the hardest time of the year for deer, late winter before the Spring green up starts. Food plots that provide good nutrition this time of the year are important in restoring bucks from the riggers of the rut and helping them make it through the tough times of late winter. The better shape they are in going into the antler growing time the better the racks will be in general terms. Vetch and clovers that will grow this time of the year can be hit hard by deer. Protein feeders are a good idea if available. One place I have a protein feeder on they only hit very much at all this time of the year and late summer.

Food plots are great, they can be a relatively cheap source of very high quality protein, timely rain is the problem at our ranch. We are just down the road from you in Leon County. When we have had good rain on spring/summer food plots it really takes pressure off of the rest of the browse. Our native browse is around 5% protein, many food plot species are 25%+. Clovers are a great option if you can raise them.

Is this a lease or do you own the property? Does it have cattle? There are things you can do to the native pasture that will boost them. Prescribe burns will benefit the deer with new growth. Right now is a good time to promote forb growth after a burn. If you can't burn and have access to a disc them some light discing at the right times in spots can promote new forb growth. Fertilizing native plants can also benefit the deer with better mast crops and increasing the amount and quality of fertilized plants. One of the most beneficial to habitat is killing deer if you are above carrying capacity.

Most important question is where is your place? If you can use food plots, they are usually best. If you are in deep south Texas, you might have to put your "food plot" in a free choice feeder. I have clover, wheat and turnips on my place right now and they are getting hit hard. 90% of my pics are from the plots and 10% are from the corn feeders. Probably the best time to feed corn is when it is very cold and cold for a long time. Corn has the complex carbs to keep them going and warmer. I did have soybeans planted that were 60% eaten in the summer and the 40% that made it to maturity were gone the first cold spell. My place is in South Central Oklahoma for reference.

Food plots help, no doubt. My answer was based more on a 'what can I do right now' than 'what is a good long term plan'. Any sort of green feed is great for them, especially this time of year.

The only thing you can do "now" is feed them corn/soybeans/protein from a can. Where you are at, a plot planted in Aug/Sep of Oats/Wheat/turnips (30%/60%/10%) would be more preferred by the mature bucks. The Oats should live until a good cold spell. The wheat is hearty and will stay all winter and mature in late spring....same with the turnips. If the wheat and turnips don't get demolished, you will be able to lightly disc them in around August and have you plot already planted. Might just throw in some Oat seed. Oat seed is about $20 for 50lb bag, wheat about $15 and turnips are very cheap. $150 in seed should get a nice 5 acre plot planted easily. I would also throw some fertilizer on it too. Again, about $12 for 50lb bag at feed store. Soil test is best, but not really needed for plan I just gave you. For about $200 to $250, you can hold a nice group of deer on your place through the winter. That is if you have access to a tractor/plow. If you don't, feeder is cheaper.

Thanks... I'll hold on to this... And yes I have access to a tractor..

anyone seen these protein block feeders? Just noticed a friend of mine works for this company so I had to see what they did. Pretty cool, never thought about doing a block feeder.

All of these suggestions will help with antler growth. I think the cheapest and best way to see the best antler growth is let the buck get to the age that he will naturally grow his best rack. I don't know if y'all have a management plan in place or not, but that needs to be the first step. Try not shooting the bucks until they get to at least 4 1/2 years old but really 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 is best. Cull out inferior bucks and shoot doe.

our lease owner has been pulling cedars for the past couple of years. This has made a huge difference in forb growth. Good for the deer and his cattle.
