I'm looking for some advice on rifles that have short bolt throws. I currently own Browning A-bolt and Remington 700 rifles with Zeiss Conquest scopes.

I don't have a problem with the Browning rifles, but my Remington 700 rifles give me problems when the bolt is cycled. I have very little clearance between the bolt handle and scope eye piece, especially with scope cap covers installed.

Therefore, I'm thinking about selling/trading off the Remington for something that has a shorter bolt throw. I've been thinking about a Sako A7 or Weatherby. Can someone tell me whether the throws are shorter on these two rifles?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had the same problem with the same rifle & scope set up. Mod "700". Just went to medium height rings.

I have considered putting taller rings on. However, I currently have medium rings on the rifles, and really don't want to go any taller. The medium rings give me plenty of clearance for the objective, and still allows me to keep a good cheek-weld on the stock.

I really like the way the Remington 700 shoots, more accurate than my Brownings, but the lack of bolt clearance is really getting annoying.

Can the bolt handle be reshaped?

I'm surprised you still have that small of a clearance even with medium rings on your 700. I initially installed the conquest on standard height rings and had virtually no clearance to the bolt but the medium height gave me enough but certainly not a lot. I don't know that the bolt angle or throw can be changed on a 700 without making other adjustments to the factory stock.

I currently have Leupold rings on the rifles, would other manufacture's medium rings be taller?

And just to mention, I think the main clearance problem is due to the Butler Creek scope cap cover. Without the cover I would have around 1/8" clearance.

Just send the bolt to kampfeld and have him put a longer/new knob on the 700

Rings would be the solution. Weatherby Vangaurd S1 has little clearance(no clearance) when the Zeiss covers are on but it is okay with out covers. (50mm)

This may be what I need to do. Part of what compounds the clearance problem are my fingers being wrapped around the knob of the bolt. If I extended the knob about an inch that would make a big difference.

Whew, I think you just gave me the solution. The extended bolt might be cosmetically unsightly, but the answer to my problem.

I Googled and found Kampfeld Custom. Thanks.

I just bought a 700 SPS Tactical was planning on putting a Zeiss 50mm on it. Guess I will check in to it.

I have these on all my rifles....inexpensive, great quality, work great and make the bolt much easier to work. Highly recommend!
