I can't decide on a ND3 Lazer designator that mounts on a normal scope or an ATN 410 1st gen night vision scope... Any thought? Will the designator and a normal scope work better than the night vision? There about the same price. I Will be using it for coyotes and hogs.

Gen 1 Night Vision is a hit or miss proposition. If you are close and working over a bait you might be ok but in NV even more than most optics, you get what you pay for. There is a reason that a set of gated PVS 9's cost as much as a car. I would go with the light and scope.

I have a ND3 set up on my 308, and it has worked well out to 75-100 yards, but the 1st gen NV I have used worked much better. I would look into the Pulsar Digisight N550 and a good IR illuminator.

I have a n550 with a yukon IR light. Amazing results. I also had a nd3 and had some success with it but some animals spook with it

Just doing it for fun now.

Instead of getting gen 1, I would go with a light and scope (or save and get a gen3). But I would look at other options than the ND3. I use one and like it, but hate it in cold or rain.

Ditto on finding other options than the ND3. There are other topics about lights. The XLR250 is one I've been using lately mounted on the rifle. Liteforce makes some great lights. They stop when hit with that much light. Next is nothing but the flash!

I have limited experience with the ND3, but it doesn't seem to do much (for my purposes, anyway) that a kill light wouldn't do for half the cost. That's about as much as I can say on the matter without lying.

I stalk pigs with a gen1 sight. I get close to 'em. I'm not sure I've taken a shot over about 50 yards. The Gen1 stuff is perfectly adequate for that sort of hunting (and in some ways it's actually perfect for it), BUT, keep in mind that the ATN 410 is going to be REALLY heavy, it's going to ride REALLY high on your rifle so your cheek weld will be less than ideal (if you put it on a moderate recoiling rifle you are probably going to have at least one incident of scope bite with it) and, while it will be capable of precise shots at short ranges, you can't do much better than centerpunch a pig that's 100 yards away with any degree of confidence. In other words, the effective range for making a pig DRT is about 70 or 80 yards... That's not to say that you can't make a pig DRT at 100, just that if you do then you did so beyond the effective range.

My least favorite thing about the 410 is that it locks one of my rifles down as a night hunting gun.

If you get the light, batteries and charger... you'll still spend less than most places are charging for similar lights.

Stay safe!

x2 on using the XLR-250. Great light for night hunts. I've been using them for 2 or 3 years and really like 'em. Best I've had so far.

They just came out with a subzero model that works in temps below 40

Take a look at STIK N SHOOT magnetic lighting. Green, 200 lumens. It's easy on/off and you can switch it to different guns and crossbow model.

I've hunted with it a few times and was about 75 yds from feeder and was good at that distance. PM for details.

I got the 40 mm, you can easily see game at 200 yards. It has a brightness setting so you can control the density of them beam

With a STIK N SHOOT magnetic light, you can switch guns easily or crossbow. The green light will light up eyes at 250 yds and body at 100, possibly a little more. 108 lbs of magnetic pressure so its not coming off by accident. $199

Cree lights at light mall

I did this too. I have an xlr 250 and its the same light. Bought a green and red. Way cheaper!

I played with one of those xlr 250 lights at the huntin fishing expo yesterday they seem bright. But I got on eBay and found the same Cree light for cheap and the green led bulb I'm going to make one myself and try it.

I did end up buying a nd3x50 on eBay.

Hogzilla lights, XLR250, Wicked lights, are far more inexpensive than the ND3.
