Was born and raised in Odessa, head out 20 towards Penwell and before you get to the caprock, start driving down the oilfield roads off of the service roads. You will find plenty of rabbits, groundhogs and plenty other stuff to shoot. Just be mindful of not shooting back towards the highway.

So just start shooting on random property? You trying to get this guy in trouble?

That's kind of what I was thinking.

You ever been to Odessa and down the oilfield roads? They are not fenced and not posted in any way. You can drive for miles out there and never even come to a cattle guard. It is wide open space.

I stay in Midland and work all over the Permian. This is still Texas. You can't just go shoot anywhere you like. I'm not saying that the property you are talking about can't be hunted on, but you're not talking about a specific property from what I can tell, and I would sure want more info than that before I went on someone's property and started shooting. Do you know who owns the land?

No actually I dont, but years of shooting and various hunting out there and talking to the sheriff when someone would here shooting and never receiving a ticket. Guy asked, I suggested a place. If he wants to take the advice it is his choice. SO how about leaving it at that.

I don't know if it's still like that or not. I grew up in Odessa also and we did do quite a bit of hunting down oilfeild roads. I usually went towards Crane to hunt. There is so much oilfeild traffic no one seemed to notice people hunting out there and cattle guards werent posted That was 30 years ago. Times change. The only time I was ever stopped by a sheriff he just wanted to check us for oilfeild theft. We let him look through the truck and he said be careful.

As far as the just going out and shooting anywhere....I know everyone used too, but with the extreme influx in population, not sure if I would be seen as a responsible shooter or another out of towner doing whatever they want with no respect to their area...

Buy a permit for the McElroy ranch. It's not too expensive. Check around the outdoor shops in odessa and they'll yell you who to contact.

Or there used to be a big dogtown off of the loop south of 20. A friend of mines dad would pull over to the side of the road put on his hearing protection leave his barrel inside of the cab to muffle the sound and kill them off the side of the road.... Just a thought.

I'm not sure about the folks around there, but the people up by plainview were more than happy to let us hunt prairie dogs when ever we found a town. I figured out the best way to find em was on google earth. Here's some pics. We'd just use the arrow keys and scroll along, then when we thought something looked like a prairie town we'd zoom in and look. Hope they help. Oh, and KCCO!

Prarie dog town zoomed out pretty far

A little closer

closer yet
