So my girlfriend's dad wants to get a Custom hunting rifle for my girlfriend and asked me to try and take care of it so I came here looking for help. I was thing a .270 would be a good caliber but let me know what y'all think. I have two designs in mind and hopefully y'all can give me some places that might be able to get this done.
1st Design
Wood stock
Silver fluted barrel and bolt
With Her Initials burnt/branded into the Wood on the stock

2nd Design
Synthetic stock with a winter pink camo (haven't been able to find one I like, maybe just a winter camo pattern)
Black fluted barrel and bolt
Her intitials painted onto the stock

Let me know what y'all think, thanks

I would go 7mm-08 or .260. Light recoiling rounds that will kill most anything she would want to hunt. It would also allow for a more compact/lighter rifle with a short action.

Here in Texas, look into Hill Country Rifles and Rifles Inc.

I would look into a 25-06 as well. It doesn't give up much to the 270, aside from a good bit of recoil.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll check into it and hopefully one of those places can give me a good deal on the rifle.

Second one gets my vote, and I agree with 7-08 or .260

If you are considering a fluted barrel look at one of the spiral fluted ones. I always thought that they looked strange until I saw one on my buddy's wife's rifle. She had a stainless one on a rifle with a custom paint job on a HS Precision stock and it looked pretty cool.

Not sure how much you want to spend, but take a look at Shilen. I have been shootin a 25-06 since it was a wildcat round. Another option just down 35 from you is Hill Country Rifle. They do excellent work. IMO

Find a barrel or order a barrel. Could be instant or 16 weeks

Get an action. Instant no wait unless you get some customs

Order a pink or color scheme Mcmillan stock to your likings 16 weeks

Find person to put it together 1 month - 2 years

Start ordering now to have it ready possibly by next hunting season

You ought to look at a 25-06, it is a very hard round to beat, flat fast and accurate!!

Agree on Shilen, the barrel will cost a little more but not that much in comparison to the rifle. The gunsmith who has built some rifles for us uses his barrels and the results are fantastic.

I think your first choice in either 257 Roberts or 243 will be the best. I would look at Cooper Arms and then get a custom sling from this guy: http://www.levergunleather.com/images/briankslgcvr1.jpg

Something like this customized to fit your exact needs:

I would advise not to do the whole pink camo thing and putting initials on a gun really hurts its value. If you do a custom sling and butt stock protector you get what you are looking for and can change it if required in the future...

I'm just curious jchapman, does your gf like that pink camo and stuff like that?
I know my woman hates that kind of stuff. She feels like it's just a gimicky way of trying to get women to buy guns.

Also, may want to consider Hil Country Rifles. I think they are pretty booked up, but they're right in your backyard. I held one once and thought it was built excellently. And the wood was pretty.

Don't know how recoil sensitive the girlfriend is ,and what you plan to hunt with this rifle. If I were keeping the rifle lightweight , I would to look into Melvin Forbes of Ultra Lite Rifles. Caliber? ,maybe a 7x57, 6.5x55, 257 Roberts, or 260 Rem. I also agree with no initals on the stock, this could hurt the resell value. Also, remember there are many production rifles new and used for a lot less money.
Good Luck, jefe08

I doubt NULA is a good idea, even if she's not recoil sensitive.
