Got some questions about duck hunting for all you pros. Always been a hunter but never proper duck hunting. I've got access to small pond that is probably 5 acres of water now but could be close to double in a wet year. Anyways I've been over there fishing couple times over last month and have busted ducks every time. I'm not talking 5-10, we're talking 50-75 probably. I know there have been some mallards but beyond that not sure what else, my stupidity about duck ID! Was wondering how you would properly hunt this tank? I'm assuming they stay here because they will circle for 30 mins after we bust them and they keep trying to come back in the whole time we fish. How do you hunt where they stay all night? Decoys, etc....

Best think to do is get out there before sun up, set up on side of pond where wind is to your back (so wind comming out of the north, set up on north side of pond), set deeks out in "V" shape with you at the bottom of the V, so you have pocket for the ducks to land, legal is 30 minutes before sunrise, shoot them in the face as they come in!!!

What guy said X2! Make sure to get steel shot, license/stamps, study up on duck id, and post pics after the massacre!

How many decoys should I set? Do I need to invest in a mojo? Do you start shooting as soon as they come in at first light or let some come in and wait a while? Should I construct a blind?

3-6, not this late in the season, as soon as its legal shoot time and birds are in range, shoot them, pile up a brush blind.

You need 5 dozen deeks and 6 mojos. Make sure to keep calling ALL the time......oh, this isn't public is it....sorry, bad advice.

Take these guys advice......I did. I am probably exactly like you...veteran hunter but never duck hunted. My buddy has a small tank covered in ducks and I asked them the same question a month ago. I followed their advice to the letter and man did it pay off. I got there before daylight, threw out the decoys (mine are pintail...they said species did not matter and they were right.) I then set up in a makeshift ground blind ( 8 feet of burlap stapled to three wooden stakes) with my boy and waited. I thought, "maybe I will see a few and get one." Sshhheee.....I limited out in about 15 minutes. Widgeon, GWT, and my first Canvasback. My son (10) had a blast picking up the ducks and decoys from the tank with my kayak. Make sure you buy steelshot and get your federal duck stamp....it is also a good idea to get a duck ID guide or app for your phone...and start learning to ID the differnet ducks now before you go. Once you do it you will be hooked....I know I am. Good luck! Oh yeah and thanks for all the good advice guys.....this forum is awesome.

I know there were several mallards. Some of the others not sure about but I did some pronounced black and white coloring on some. I know sounds stupid right!

Black and white birds are almost for sure ring necks. They are tough to clean, but fun to shoot when they rocket by.

3" shell w steel shot with 2's or 3's or 4's. Anything like that should work.
