I wouldn't try it. Just call the Game Warden and provide details (e.g., description of person and license plate #).

Yes, you can, it's called a citizens arrest.

Wonder if the poachers are reading this forum? Maybe they don't coz if they don't have money to pay lease or have a private property surely no money to pay for internet. Tsk tsk bad people.

I think everyone understands the magnitude of shooting at or near anyone.....crazy and reckless!

Call me crazy, call me reckless but if I catch anyone trepassing on or near my feeders, stands or attempts to open one of my stands while me, my wife, or one of my grandkids is in the stand they may seriously want to think about running real fast or at least faster than 3000 fps.

He never said fire a shot AT/TOWARDS that person, he just said shoot a round off. Let them know you're there by firing off a round in the air or in a direction that isn't towards that person.

Just the sound of a gun going off for a trespasser may keep them from ever coming back.

I was in Hunt County on a friends place once several years ago..watched a young man cross the fence and he was headed right towards me..I let him walk right up on me..then I leveled my rifle at him and told him to drop his gun..he did..took his gun with me..and gave it to the landowner..told him what had happened..turned out they were from Houston and were friends with the neighbors of the landowner...should have seen the look on his face..begging me not to shoot him..I had to laugh..he freaked out when I kept his gun...messed up my hunt for sure..

May also cause return fire. Either way firing a shot doesn't seem like a good idea. Even though it maybe tempting.

The legal ramifications of shooting someone just because they trespass isn't worth the heart ache. You will regret that decision if you shoot them and try and say they threatened your life.
Not worth it folks...

When I say you will regret that decision, I mean in the legal bills that will follow.

If you will let the local game warden know that you are having problems with poachers he can start making a case against the intruders so that when they are caught he has plenty to book them. Also game wardens work a beat just like cops do; so if you'll let him know I'm sure he'd be happy to go by your property every so often to make sure their are no trespassers.

No, you can be charged with kidnapping, which is a first degree felony and having a weapon makes it Aggravated Kidnapping. Just call the GW and keep yourself out of trouble would be the best idea.

I have found on several occasions that lack of money was not a problem for poacher. Saw a caddie Escalade pulled over by the Sheriff one day with a dead deer in the back. LEO friend of mine said they killed the deer during season, but without tags or license. The two guys were 'well respected' business men (Sr. VP at Bank and other a College Dean). Not a hunting example, but College President was arrested at a local lake for taking ONE HUNDRED Crappie- about 3/4 were undersized- (on that lake 9' length with 20/day limit)- again no license and boat not even registered.
