Well our lease has been very productive for several years but now our deer count has been way down where we used to see upwards of 20 head at a time now were lucky to see one.Well with that being said we were instructed NOT to kill coyotes due to the fact they don't hurt anything. Now when we set in the stands I have seen as many as 10 coyotes in one morning and 0 deer you can drive around the land and they just set there and watch you I tried to talk to the land owner about this but he is convinced this is not a problem what do yall think thanks for your comments in advance.

What does the owner think is causing it? Any changes in grazing practices in the last few years?

Has it just been this year you've had a lack of deer? I know this year has been bad for a lot of people throughout the state. If it's just this year, I wouldn't jump yet, but that's just me.

As far as coyotes go, 10 at a time is a huge coyote problem. If the land owner doesn't want you touching them and you've had a continued decline in deer population, maybe it is time to jump.

I dunno what's up in Montague county, but it seems over the last several years we've been seeing and hearing a LOT more song dogs there. Like IHFP said, if you are seeing 10 in the morning (or seeing them just standing there looking at you in broad daylight), that is a big issue. At this point they are not afraid of you and need to be shown why it's not a good idea to sit still in front of a hunter.

We have been educating every one we see. A lot of them terminally. Not nearly enough, though. rifle

That many yotes is a problem. Talk to the State Biologist for that county. Ask them if they will talk to the landowner with you about Coyotes and deer, Perhaps they can convince your land owner about the impact coyotes can have on the deer population.

I've read of several recent studies that found deer numbers increase significantly when efforts were made to control coyotes. I believe the most recent one was done in South Carolina.

I've also read that coyotes can be responsible for 80% of fawn mortality. They are fawn-killing machines.

How big is your lease? Maybe get with a neighbor about coyote control instead of on your own place? Would be good for all parties involved. If you can't kill them there, maybe you can kill them somewhere else?

I would shoot them anyways and drag them off. Call me unethical or not obeying the rules but coyotes kill deer. I would bet a paycheck that at least 90% of people would shoot a coyotee whiel in the stand when they are trying to hunt deer. shoot them

I pass coyotes while Im deer hunting... After season I set out on a vengeance for them. Kill a pig, leave it lay in front of a nice heated spot where you could set all night... and get to slaying those suckers!

In your position Id kill them during season... I would shoot every one of those coyotes and not say a dang word.... If he caught me then he could boot me.

But Im not paying for a DEER lease to watch coyotes.

Shoot every yote you see. We are in Montague and it can be slim pickings at a feeder. Or you can see 10 in a hunt. I did not see one yote while hunting this year but heard them. Our south neighbor is running snares and appears to be successful seeing the dead ones. It seems the deer sightings are just way down overall around there so either pop dropped or they have better things to eat which seems to be the case.

I saw 3 total bucks and about 30 does this year. None of the bucks on camera were seen by a hunter on our place.

Link to the recent study in South Carolina that determined a very positive impact on deer numbers can be achieved by efforts to remove coyotes. It would appear they have declared war on the critters.

If only coyotes were as effective on newborn hogs.

I think coyotes are misunderstood.

You have a bad yote problem if your seeing 10 at a time!.... And I can promise you that a pack of them will put an absolute hurting on the local deer population. I actually helped a friend of mine in college write a thesis on the subject. The study area included three different tracts of land, public wma, private but free range and closed high fence. I won't go into all of the numbers because I'm sure others will disagree with me and I don't want to start a big discussion but you really need to get rid of those coyotes... or at least reduce those numbers some.

Just like any poisonous snakes, coyotes create an immediate "kill that sucker" reaction.

I can't understand why the rancher thinks that coyotes are not a problem. Our landowner gives us $100 credit on our lease fee for every coyote we kill (Kinney county.) I would love to see 10-20 of them and make a big dent in my lease payment!

The only good reason I can think of for giving coyotes a free pass is to help you manage for carrying capacity if the deer herd is way over populated. Of course they're not overly selective about which deer they kill. If the deer herd is below capacity and you have a lot of coyotes, then you have a problem.

OK, coyotes eat fawns, what do they eat the other 11 months?

Something additional is causing your deer shortage.

hehe coyotes eat mice and lots of them
where i hunt the landowner does not want any yotes killed we have lots of them. we also have lots and lots of deer, hogs, turkey, rabbits, coons and squirrels. the yotes arent living up to their reputation on this ranch.

We have the same the same problem with deer population dropping in Haskell county but no increase in coyotes... I think the dry spells over the past couple of years have slowly forced the deer to move for water and such

Every lease I have been on, and owner I have talked to, say kill every coyote that you see.
Our last lease we were on for five years, we killed every coyote that we saw, and we would still hear them singing around the camp ever night. The coyotes with good instincts are hard to get. It appears that even your stupid ones are doing pretty good. So much for survival of the fittest.
I think neighboring ranchers would like to now about the coyote ranch next door, I bet they would not appreciate it much.
