For all of you who have kids with BB guns. Make sure you tell them not to stick their finger over the barrel and pull the trigger. My 9 year old has been using his for three plus years. On new years day at the deer lease he decided to put his finger over the barrel and pull the trigger. The BB went all the way through the bottom of his left index finger and exited the top leaving a bone sticking out of his skin. Needless to say this resulted in a trip to the ER and the bone doctor.

That is one reason I never gave my kids BB guns. They went straight to rimfire and centerfire. Too may kids that they knew were treating BB guns more like toys than guns. Not saying that you personally did not train your kids, just making a statement from what I have experienced with other parents. Hope your kid heals quickly.

I did start questioning myself on how much safety I actually covered with him before giving him the gun. I think your right. He treats it more like a toy than a gun.

Did the same thing in 6th grade! We were chasing donkeys out of a meadow we were going to deer hunt, i wasn't paying attention and put my hand on top of my c02 powered BB pistol when it jammed. Pulled back the spring (for the magazine) and it fired when I let it go. BB got jammed down in my pinky joint... tore it up pretty good for just a BB gun. still cant move it very well even after getting it removed! Through all the bad it taught me a good lesson and now i'm extremely careful as to where my hands are and what my surroundings are when i'm handling guns!I hope your son is alright!

You'll shoot your eye out!
Sorry about your son. Man, I look back at all the stupid things we did with BB guns when I was a kid, and cringe. Luckily nobody is missing an eye, or worse. Gun safety is not a joke. I like the poster's idea of going straight to rimfire.

Wow. Thanks for the info. We just got our 7 year old twin boys bb guns for their birthday. They are kept locked up in our bedroom and treated like all other guns. Not to be shot unless dad is standing beside you. But in our safety talk I honestly don't remember ever saying don't put your finger over the barrel. New lessons tonight. Thanks. And prayers for a fast recovery for your son.

Not sure about recomendation going straight to centerfire. Would much rather have him learn a lesson with the BB gun than with a 22.
My son knew the moment he got his gun, even though it was a BB gun it was a weapon and could be a dangerous weapon if not used properly.
I didn't put a 22 in his hands until he demonstrated he could handle the BB gun properly.
Doesn't matter if its a BB gun, 22, 30-06, or a 12 gauge, safety principles are basically the same. 1. Always treat if its loaded, pointed in safe direction. 2. Only point it at a target you plan on shooting, and never put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot. 3. Safety is on until you're ready to shoot, safety back on immediately after you shoot.
I trust my 7 year old with a 22 in his hand than most 16-18 year olds that I've been around in the past.
