Since the quail numbers are down. I am looking to purchase some quail to train my puppies. Anyone know the closest place to Jayton that I can buy birds? Thanks

Buy them from a hatchery as chicks, super cheap.
Google quail hatchery McMurry is one of the biggest ones.

We have plenty of birds ready to go. The only problem is we are in Brenham which is not close. If your still interested let me know, and I'll try to help anyway I can.

So I am new to "buying birds". I would like to purchase some to put on my 70 acres and hope that they survive and become prevalent again...
What does it take to do this? Just buy 20 of them, put them in a box and drive to the ranch and let them go?
Thanks in advance

It takes a lot! Fire ants, predators, disease... I'd do a lot of reading before I'd make the investment. If you have any wild birds, I'd invest in improving the habitat. Given the size of your property, you may not make much of an impact unless it's coordinated with neigboring landwoners in some type of management co-op.
Buying and releasing quail when you are able to hunt them might be your best option. Hate to hunt pen raised birds but to get some dog and enjoy your property, it might be something you consider.

hey Frey, save our money- they will be Coyote food within a few weeks-
Thats why quail numbers are near zero in tx.
I have heard stories, but pen raised quail will not adopt, PERIOD

hmmm. That website is intriguing. It seems I could make one for much less money though...Does anyone have first hand experience?
You know I don't see alot of coyotes, but I do hear them. I guess you are right about that.
Thank you everyone for the advice.

The guys in Bandera usually have flight cond. birds for sale at all times, but sometimes a little high..I've not found that any pen raised bird stocks well as they are not afraid of man or beast...We used to have quail shoots years ago and we'd go around and get the missed birds which would just group up agains't a wall or anywhere and stand there..they didn't react to shot like a wild bird does either..much harder to kill..

Does anyone know where to buy quail in Tarrant, Hood, Johnson, or Parker County? I live in southwest Fort Worth. Our lease is in Young County between Graham & Olney so that area is convenient, too.
I've seen 'em lose and I've seen 'em win But I've never seen 'em quit.

I bought 150 flight conditioned birds off coolhandgsps that were exellent. Mike and I held a "cannned" hunt for them which resulted in 75 birds killed over two days. I can't say if any survived to breed. But it was a fun hunt.
