I received sad news that my pup I gave to a buddy of mine was poisoned on a hunt this weekend. I moved to Tyler and could only have one dog over 25 lbs at the house I'm renting. I had bought a really nice pup ( $1500) then got the opportunity to buy my resturant. I had a buddy who hunts a lot and wanted a dog but said he couldn't afford it. I gave her to him and in return I was going to get a pup out of her later. He called me Saturday and said she hunted the morning and was playing around with some kids at the cabin but they drove to town and within 30 mins she was foaming at the mouth and couldn't stand up. They took her to the vet and she died within an hour. The vet thinks it was poison. The rancher has had coyote problems and they think he baited for the coyotes but of course no one knows anything. They called the gamewarden and hopefully he can find something out. RIP Jade

Horrible. My grandpa lost a couple of dogs to poison a few years back except somebody walked up and dropped it into their pen. He, understandly, took it pretty hard. Sorry for the loss of a family member.

Sounds like rat poison to me as well. I had a dog do the exact same thing from it.

I’ll relate a story for general consumption, this isn't directed at anyone because most of the time we aren't lucky enough to see what causes harm to our dogs, I was lucky… but it goes without saying that if you hunt with a dog, you better be prepared to take care of it if the worst happens. We put them in harms way by hunting them. Get a field first aid manual and READ EVERY PAGE OF IT… get all of the stuff you could possibly need and keep it with you when you travel to hunt. There was a thread about seizures on here the other day… I’ve never seen one, but I read about it in my manual and I carry honey and glucose tablets in case it ever happens.

Several years ago, I was out on a quail hunt with my kids over a thanksgiving holiday. We were staying in my parents RV. We had brought the dog inside because it was so cold outside… one of my kids hollered at me that the dog was “getting something” behind the chair. I looked behind the chair where he was and he was eating rat poison. I immediately swept his mouth (and got a bunch of green stuff) but it was obvious that he had eaten a bunch. If you don’t know this already, they make that stuff taste good so animals WILL eat it.

I have always carried a dog first aid kit with a field first aid manual. I was able to find the section on “poisonings” and it said to give the dog a tablespoon or two of hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit and call the vet. I would have never known to give a dog hydrogen peroxide… and believe me, when you stick your finger down a dogs throat to try and make them vomit like you can do with a kid… you get bit, hard. I carry hydrogen peroxide as part of my “de-skunking” materials so I dumped some down his throat and tied the dog outside. I gave my daughter a radio, told her to stay with the dog and I headed about a mile up to the main road to get a cell signal. I called the vet (had the number with me because I learned that in the manual also) and was able to relate to him what was going on, by this time the dog was vomiting green foam that eventually turned into white foam. The vet assured me that I did exactly what they would have done and that the dog was going to be ok, but I needed to bring him in (2.5 hour drive) the next day to get him on some vitamin K to counteract the poison.

Like I said, I was lucky… mainly because I caught the dog eating it. Get the stuff... be prepared, you owe it to your hunting partner. At the very least find the local vets close to where you hunt and get their numbers and keep them with you. All of the ones I have ever called have gladly given me a cell number for 24 hour emergencies.

Been there too first Chance, standing on the roof of my truck talking to the vet, I was shocked at how well the peroxide worked. That was 12 years ago & you will not catch me without peroxide ever.

Bummer of a story. Accidents do happen but does not soften the blow. I rarely let my dog run around camp to avoid getting into food scraps, animal feces, bones, or anything else. I also try to get him to drop anything he picks up in the field, but I was mainly worried about diarrhea. I appreciate the advice, and have been reminded to look out for other things.

I have also caught my old Brittany "Spotter" RIP, after she ate a whole box of unopened rat poison. I only knew she had eaten it cause I found a few small pieces of the box on the ground. Rushed her to the vet, in time. She vomited it all up. A year later, at about 8 years old, her kidneys started to fail. She lived another 3-4 months before I had to put her down. I've always wondered if the poison had anything to do with her kidneys going out.
