I have been very fortunate to take some really nice Boars in my life but on the afternoon of December 26th I had a encounter with a Boar bigger than anything I thought I would ever see in the wild.

We had a north wind that afternoon so I elected to hunt a spot I don’t get to hunt very much because our predominate winds are usually south or south west. About 4:30pm I had a nice 8 point come out and feed for awhile. Then about 5:15 he spun around and took off like a scalded dog. Having seen that reaction many times before I knew it had to be a pig so I took my gloves off and steadied the rifle on the camera tripod I use for a rest. Sure enough about 3 minutes later the biggest Boar I have ever seen in my life steps out at 309 yards away. I was already shivering pretty good from the cold wind and the “Boar fever” (I just made that up ) only made it worse. After a couple of minutes I felt comfortable enough to make the long shot so I clicked off the safety and started to squeeze the trigger. When the gun sounded I listened for that infamous “ka-whop” that indicates a solid hit and sure enough I heard it and knew he was hit before I could even regain sight of him in the scope after the recoil. Once I regained sight of him in the scope I could see he dropped right in his tracks and after a few kicks he was done. I slowly inched my way down the mountain towards him and once I cleared the mesquites I couldn’t believe how big he was. With each step he got bigger and bigger and when I finally got up next to him I knew without a doubt he was the biggest wild hog I had ever seen in my life. I rolled him over and the 122gr bullet from the 257 Weatherby Magnum had busted his right shoulder just like I had intended preventing him from going anywhere while also making for a quick kill.

When I went to drag him towards the brush for some pictures is when I really realized just how big he was. I have never seen a pig that I couldn’t get my hands around their ankles to drag them so this was a first for me. When I went to move him I maybe moved him 5’ before giving up. The real fun began when I went back to camp to retrieve the trailer and returned to load him up. The little trailer I have only sits about 1’ off the ground but all I could get of him up on the trailer was his rear legs so I had to resort to plan B. Plan B was to use a ATV ramp as a ramp to help pull him up on the trailer since lifting was now out of the question. Plan B was a failure as well. Plan C was to roll him over on to the ATV ramp and then grab the ramp and pull him up using my own weight as leverage against his and hopefully reach a break over point where I could push the rest of the way. That was a no go as well. After re-assessing the situation I decided to try rolling him onto the ATV ramp then strapping him down to it so he wouldn’t slide. Next I put one end of the ramp up on the trailer and then with all the strength I had in me I lifted the other end and slid the ramp into the trailer like a stretcher going into a ambulance. Finally he was ready for the ride back to camp. (My back is still sore )

I have hunted pigs for over 15 years now all across the state of Texas but have never seen or gotten pictures of a pig anywhere near as big as this one and I am not sure I ever will again. I am not going to try and put a weight on him because I wouldn’t even know where to begin having never seen anything like this before. I can tell you I have killed a handful of 300 pounders over the years that were weighed and this one was MUCH bigger than those. I do know that with him stretched out like he is in the pictures he measured 6’-9” from snout to rear hoof.


It was a hunt I will never forget!!
