It was a very long, frustrating season in SW Kansas. The drought and high temps during most of the season really threw us a curveball this year.

The buck that I had targeted, a 160's 10 point disappeared right before season. About the time he disappeared, a good 8 point showed up and took his place in the herd according to trail cameras.

I hunted hard and made a total of 6 trips up there during season in an attempt to fill my tag. I passed a couple good deer the first two trips, but when the rut hit, all daytime activity came to an end. All activity on camera was during dark hours for some crazy reason. I just chalked it up to the unseasonably dry and warm conditions.

I went back up for the last weekend and finally scored on the below 8 point. He is the deer that showed up when my big 10 disappeared. I had one previous encounter with him a few weeks ago when he came in right after dark. I grunted at him and he immediatly snort wheezed back at me at about 15 yards. In all my years, this was a first for me to experience in the wild. It was awesome.

Anyway, Saturday evening I spotted him at approximatley 250 yards, walking left to right. I grunted loudly at him and he stopped and looked my direction. I gave him two short grunts just for confirmation. He came in at a dead run. He circled downwind and after a little cat and mouse, I was able to get an arrow in him after holding my draw for about 2 long minutes. He jumped the string and took it in the spine. Had to follow up with one to the vitals.

The best news is that my big 10 showed back up on camera about 10 days ago, but was completely busted up. Maybe with this guy out of the herd, the big 10 will hang around next season.

Cell phone pics are horrible...

Nice buck and congrats! Western Kansas was really in bad shape this year from the drought.

Congrats, nice deer. Your luck was better than ours, we hunt SW Kansas as well and it was a VERY hard year hot and dry, taking a toll on the heard. Last year we took 5 that all went over 160, and mine was over 200, this year the biggest one we took as about 155.
