It has been a roller coaster season that has had its ups and downs, tough hunting early on then things started to turn around with one of the young men that help out around our farm killing a nice buck in our back pasture then I got one in Nemo then another one in my back pasture at home. As hunts go sometimes, it seemed every time I had the chance to take my grandson Cyrus hunting it was too hot or too windy or both and the deer just wasn’t moving, not seeing anything, no deer, no pigs nothing. Man did things change last weekend, we went down on Friday and set up camp and hit the stand early Cyrus in tow with his new Mossberg camo 30/06 he got for Christmas from old St. Nick himself wink , about an hour before sunset I looked to my left and about 250 yds.’ off where about 40 pigs, one standing head and shoulder above the rest but they didn't stick around long and headed into the woods offering no shot. It was promising at least and we couldn't wait to see what the morning hunt would bring. Saturday morning about 8am I caught movement to our right and looked and 4 bucks where crossing a clearing in the woods, I hit my grunt tube, hit it again and they wouldn't stop. I guess with the wind coming from that direction they couldn't hear it. It wasn't 10 minutes later that 3 more different bucks crossed the same clearing, things are starting to get real exciting but again can’t stop them. Then as quick as those disappeared 3 more bucks came out about 100 yards from the blind to our right, 3-8 point bucks, all management bucks but again they came out walked about 40 yards I hit the grunt tube they stopped and then went right back in the woods, seems we just couldn’t get anything to slow down for a shot. Things slowed down and the tummy’s started to growl so we took a lunch break and waited for the evening hunt. Saturday evenings hunt was just as exciting, started out slow but near sundown about 250 yards off 6 does came out and where running around fighting over corn we had poured along a trail and then out stepped a toad, a huge 10 point 5 ½ year old buck, a beautiful monarch of the woods, but he was all busted up on the left and we were on a management hunt (only 1 buck per leasee, mgmt. for guest or family) with as far as the does where and were Cyrus was sitting the grass and broom weed was too high for a shot but things were really promising.
Fast forward to Sunday morning just a few minutes after good shooting light I looked to my left and not 60 yards from the stand was a doe looking over her left shoulder, I looked past her and coming down the pasture and up the hill toward was 1, no 2, no 3 bucks in tow. The doe starts to walk our way and getting only 30 yards from our ground stand she busts us and took off heading the way she came when an 8 point buck cuts her off, runs her back past our stand with him not 20 yards behind her, I do a vocal BLEEEAAAT and he stops broadside right in front of the blind, Cyrus take him, take him I said, the bucks starts to run again, I bleat again he stops at 63 yards ¼ away from us and Cyrus let the hammer down, Buck down with one shot from his new 30/06! What an awesome hunt the only bad thing was with as fast as everything happened I wasn't able to get the hunt on video, but we did get the recovery on video and made a memory that will last us both a lifetime. Cyrus has hunted with me for 5 years now, he started at 8 years old and killed 2 does at my cousins’ lease and both were taken with one shot, then a hunt at Whitney he killed a doe with one shot and now his first buck at 13 with one shot. Here is Cyrus Levin Routh Reddell with his 8 point buck, btw this one’s going on his wall!

Thanks everyone. Pretty special moment just proud I was able to share that with him. There will only be one first. After his shot he was shaking like a leaf. It happened so fast I don't think his buck fever hit till after the shot, he was speechless for a minute just staring in amazement with a big ole smile on his face.
