I had a savage 30-06 synthetic that I got rid of because of the recoil

You did not say what the use of the rifle would be. IMO, the best "bang for the buck" would be to find a used 30-30. Put an aftermarket recoil pad on it, and it brings an already low recoil rifle down even lower. Ammo is always easy to find too. If you are going to be taking 300 yard shots though, the 30-30 would not work.

A .260 would be a good caliber if you can find one. More power than a .243 and not much more recoil. Also a wood stocked rifle would give a bit more weight to the gun helping cut back the perceived recoil.

You already have a 700 Remington (nothing any better) short action, why not get it blue printed, rebarreled to 308 Winchester, Jewell trigger and restocked by a REAL gunsmith? Now you are fixed for life! Nothing left to do but upgrade optics. You even have time for it to be finished for next deer season if you get started now. PM me for my gunsmith's info (he will only do "full tilt" or nothing - no he isn't cheap).

Has anyone noticed any differences between the Vanguard Series I and II? There has been mention of the Series II being more expensive and closer to that $500 price point.

Not bashing but just suggesting that people add more clarity to their posts since the Series I rifles are still widely available.

in all honesty i think all you get is a new trigger and accuracy guarantee, i bet thats it, i bet nothin else is different, well the stock got uglier if thats even possible.
damn good guns though

That's the camo wrapped, heavy barrel dude? What did it run you, $549 with scope package? I like that caliber, plenty of killing power and a little less recoil than some others.

No votes for an AR in 6.8? I love mine! LWRC M6A3 16" and I usually use 110gr Accubonds. It isn't an inexpensive gun, but there are plenty of variants that are much more affordable. And The AR platform is especially fun for hogs.

I am a Ruger and Browning guy, but I have never heard of a guy with a Marlin complain. The X7 looks good.
I went to the range with a buddy to sight in a Marlin 243 that came with a scope on it. 1" groups at 100 yards.
My high dollar Browning with a Leupold could barely match him.

I've had a .25-06 Rem 700 BDL with a Leupold VX-II 3x9 for almost 20 years now. Beautifully grained walnut stock. It has a kill rate of 100% out to 365yds on deer, hogs, and coyotes. Approximately 50 animals. I've always used a 115 gr. Nosler Partition loaded to perfection for that specific rifle. I love that gun because I always have the utmost confidence when I squeeze the trigger. It has the Mojo.

If you want perfection, you must achieve it. If you want cheap and imperfect, well, anyone can easily have that.

But that's just me. I like to be certain that what I shoot at dies.

I hope you're doing reloads because ammunition for the 7mm-08 is expensive. Academy sells the 7mm-08 ammunition for $25.99, and Gander Mountain sells the 7mm-08 ammunition for $34.99.

I have a Browning BAR Safari II in 30-06 with the BOSS recoil suppressor. Love it and would recommend it to anyone.

I'm new to hunting. In fact, only been out to a friends lease once and got rained out for most of the day. There are a lot of calibers being mentioned here. So, what's a good all purpose round that's good for hunting just about anything in Texas and New Mexico
