We acquired a new lease at the beginning of deer season and kept our lease that we had through the end of this hunting season. We found the game warden and advised him where we were and who we were leasing from and asked him to help us keep an eye on the place. Since then we have been license checked 5 times by the same game warden at our new lease and at the old lease that we had through the end of this year. That seems a bit excessive and we were wondering if anyone else has ever been treated like this by a GW. We were legal eacn and every time, but to some extent the GW is at our lease more than we are.

Hard to tell. He may have found neighbors who hunt like outlaws and he keeps coming back to check them. In an effort to appear without bias towards any group of hunters, he may be checking you as part of his follow-up routine.

That was the case one season on our lease.

Sounds like your plan of trying to be nice and transparent with the GW may have backfired to me. Keep your friends close and enemies closer..

Did you ask the landowner if the previous leasers had any run-ins with the GW?

This is the first time that I can remember being on a new lease for the first year that we never saw the Game Warden. They normally do at least one license check while they get a gut feel for the hunters involved. Maybe he had a bad gut feeling about someone or something.

I don't think its a bad thing honestly. He is keeping a look out for something and that something probably won't happen on your place.

Just keep being friendly to him everytime he visits. Once he gets a good feel for y'all I'm sure you won't be seeing him that often.

You may have appeared to be just a little too friendly, and that might have tripped some red flags for him. He might have had that experience in the past and got snookered, so it won't ever happen again.

I've had them talk casually to me and all the while his eyes were checking everything out, picking up tarps, looking around corners, all while carrying on a conversation.

They usually come by our camp every Saturday night of opening weekend. They only ask for paperwork of folks that have Deer hanging.

Well, how will he know if your breaking the law or not unless he checks your liscense? Read the GW blotter in lone star outdoor news, those poor guys can't trust anybody. Sad that there's so many scumbags in the state.

Since they started that whole "log" thing on the back of the license I imagine that may be what they are checking, not that you actually have a license. just a thought

Just saying that if we have been checked 5 times shouldn't everyone else in the counties he patrols have been checked about as many times as we have? I am not much for being too friendly with anyone, much less anyone as controlling as a law enforcement officer. Not to say that I am rude. I just show them what they want to see, answer their questions and then go about my rat killing. I figure the more friendly you are, the more the GW sees you as someone that is trying to pull something over his eyes. Never have had anything to hide and never will. I might make a mistake, but would never willingly break a game law that would put me in any type of bind. I know GW does not know that nor would he believe you if you told him, but do not care to be targeted for no reason.

If he checks you again, maybe just ask him why, in a very pleasant and respectful way of course.
Maybe mention that you hope you didn't offend him when you had asked him to keep an eye on your place.
Then again, maybe that wouldn't be a good idea after all!

Personally, I wouldn't mind it at all!!! The GW was doing what he was asked to do and if it stops the poachers in the area - great!!! I would have no problems showing my license anytime he asks to see it!!!

I'd rather have it that way than a GW who is super hard to get ahold of.
