My 8th month old GSP had never been hunting before today. Had two solid retrieves but he wasn't wanting to swim to the middle of the frozen tank.

Gunner with the ducks. Had lots more fly over, didn't setup perfect as I thought ducks were supposed to fly south especially with the temperature. Everything was headed north.

Great hunt. Remember ducks are like airplanes....they will always like to land into a wind.

Another thing to remember is that ducks move south generally ahead of the freeze line. They don't mind the cold, but frozen water is not good for them. They will migrate south ahead of the freeze line and then move around when they find water. You will see them fly north from one water body to another, but no long migrations until the cold has ended and they have water up north.

Try to set up with the wind to your back and the birds will land to your face. If that isn't possible, then a crossing shot is not a bad second. Try to avoid setting up with the wind in your face because the ducks will land from over your head and you will be shooting at their tails. Not an impossible shot, but not the preferred way by most. It is also not preferred to set up facing the East/S. East so you don't have the morning sun in your face when you raise to shoot.

Good luck and welcome to the obsession.

Why would he need someone else to be hunting with him?
