My father and I have hunted together for as long as I can remember and my sister would sometimes go, but wasn't into hunting. She enjoyed the camping and watching animals but the desire to take a deer, bird or any other animal wasn't there. I remember on particular dove hunt that she went to retrieve a bird that was shot. She walked out into the sunflowers and after she was gone a little too long, I went to check on her. Turns out the shot had only broken the wing and by the time I got there, it had a new bandage around the wing made from the toilet paper in her backpack.

A few years ago, she decided after being around hunting for 32 years, she was ready to become a hunter. She tried rabbit hunting with me but it didn't take. Squirrels were too cute, so that was out. Turns out dove hunting was to her liking. That same year she wanted a deer, so I took her out on the last morning of the season and she connected with a big doe. She has shot plenty and is a very good shot, but all weekend she was so worried about possibly wounding a deer, she sent a box of shells down the range to make sure she was ready. When the time came to make the shot, she was dead on.

Fast forward a couple of years to now. She hasn't shot a deer since but shot plenty of dove and still enjoyed the range. She decided last weekend that she was ready to do it again so my BIL took her out. He is a fairly new hunter that has a lot of passion for the sport.

I got a text that she had hit a deer but it ran off and they asked if they should go look. I told them to sit tight until dark and we would look when I got back. When I got to camp she was still shaking and retold the story over and over. It was awesome to see the thrill and I wished I could have been with her, but hearing the story is almost as good. She said that this one was even more exciting than the first because she knew what to expect. Said she couldn't talk after the shot, but wanted to call me right then to tell me all about it. I have decided that there is nothing better than seeing the excitement of a new hunter and can't wait for my kids to get there. Just hope I don't have to wait 30 years grin

Also, all the talk about horns, age, score, trophies...this slick head is a great trophy to her.

To the point...she shot the doe at 150 yards and knocked it down. The deer got up, ran down the fence line and back, jumped the fence and we had to trail it about 140 yards. She shot it with a 300 ultra mag and used 180 grain corelokt. Hit was a little high and behind the shoulder. When I cleaned it, both lungs were center punched with damage. You can see the size of the hole in the pic (sorry for the bloody pic). I was shocked to see the placement after the story and tracking.

I am blessed to be as close to my sister as I am and look forward to more hunts and stories in the years to come.

Pretty doe and a great story, always good to see new hunters. I am 26 and just started hunting. Im also a photographer and I've gotta ask what kind if camera was that pic shot with? Looks like something from the 80's, did you digitally alter it at all?

Any idea how you can shoot a doe through both lungs with a 300UM, leave a golf ball size hole, and the dang deer still run 150 yards after being knocked down confused2

Never had a deer take a step when I used that gun...
