Maybe jump but if you hit it high it might never be found. Next time shoot it smack dab in the lower shoulder, not behind. It's better to break it's leg or legs so it cant run very far or at all. You could have gut shot it if the angle was very much.

Be thorough.
Couple of weekends ago I shot a buck with my 300 Blackout. He turned tail and ran. Went looking for him and found nothing. No sign of blood, hair, nada...
Walked around for 10 minutes and on my way back to the spot I shot him at I looked over and there he was 50 yards from where I shot.
Don't give up if you know you hit him.

Don't give up if you know you hit him. This! Right now you got to think like a wounded deer. Look in or under every cedar tree, brush patch, or covered area.

Get help to look it if you feel you need it. We have a standing rule on our lease that for evening hunts, anyone should have no issues in leaving their stand while it is still daylight to help another hunter look for their deer if they ask for it.

would the deer jump if it was a miss Did you see him jump while looking through the scope immediately after the shot? How far was the shot?

Rear leg kick (mule kick is a definate hit) Back arch and jump could be a miss but could be a heart shot. You need to extend your efforts for a search. Do what Hunt and Fish said. I have shot plenty of deer with a 270 and not found blood or hair at the point of impact but found it down the trail I saw the deer take after being shot. Good luck.

My brother shot a 8 point couple days ago. 20 yard shot with 270, deer snuck in on his back side. He thought he missed by way deer jumped up and ran a short distance, then stood and walked over a hill. After 30 minutes we went to look. There was no blood on ground or anywhere we could see walking same route deer went. I had thought he got nervous and missed, found no blood anywhere. After a few minutes we found deer dead. He ws about 70 yards total from where he was shot. When we gutted him, he was missing about 1/3 of his heart! the shot went right through. When we skined him, there was alot of internal blood and in between his skin and muscle. I have only been hunting a few years, but this is a first. So, deer can walk around a minutes or so, even with part of their heart missing!

There's an awful lot of deer behind his shoulder. So did you shoot him tight behind the shoulder or way behind the shoulder. Shoot too far back an you're gonna hit liver/guts. Was his leg straight or was it forward or was it back when you shot?
Sounds like a hit to me. Give him time and then go look in the direction he was last seen running.

search the nearest water. If he's hit, he'll go to water eventually.
edited to ad: stock ponds, running creeks, puddles, any water. If it's his home turf he knows where it is and will go to it.

I guide about 20 hunts a year, IMO, the very best shot is a high shoulder shot, I tell my clients and my kids to try and break the off side shoulder, deer don't bleed much, but, don't go far either.

A 200 yard shot is something to be proud of for sure. Heck, a lot of hunters have trouble hitting the target at half that distance.
Congratulations!

You get an "attaboy"! Glad you found him. The buck I shot this year was a perfect 100+ yd shoulder shot. Jumped and ran, made a big circle, headed to water. When he knew he wasn't going to make it he nosed into a stand of Oak brush. He was only about 60 yds from where he was shot, but behind a big thick stand of trees. He had run about 100 yds in a circle and didn't show blood until after about 50 yds into the loop and then left very little. When I opened him up he had no lungs and the tip of his heart was missing. The lung cavity was filled with blood. Just remember "You got to think like a wounded deer"
