I am planning a Bison hunt in British Columbia. This will be the biggest animal I've ever taken with a bow...if I'm successful, of course. Wanted to get some feedback on an adequate draw weight and arrow weight (including broadhead) to be effective on these big monsters.
I'd love to hear the input from anyone who's been successful on a Bison or a similar animal. What did you shoot? What was your arrow eight? Broadhead? Draw weight?
Thanks.

google up archery setup bison, broadheadtalk.com, guy has a step by step on what he did and it looks to have worked pretty well, 700 grain arrows. Like shooting a spear. He seams to have already done the high math on this one.

Thanks for the information Killemall. I googled it and found the article. Very informative. Looks like I need somewhere around 750-800 grains. Looks like my 70 pound Bowtech will do the trick. I was planning to shoot a 140 grain broadhead. I'll just have to practice with the ultra heavy arrow weight to get my ranges set. I'm not anticipating anything longer than 40 yards and hopefully half that, if all goes well.

when you run that through the calculator it looks horrible, dont know which bowtech but at 340 ibo, 70 #s, 30 inch draw,80 grains on the string it still ain't good. I get the momentum deal but KE is horrible. I dont know, looks like it worked for him. I get a blazing 153fps, and like a 43 ke. am I doing something wrong?

You know, Indians killed these things with a long bow. I believe a 70lb bow, shooting anywhere over 290, with a 450grn arrow should do just fine.
gun control means hitting what you are aiming at!

Yes you are doing something wrong. Trust me the calculators dont actually show real numbers. You will be able to get out to 40 yds easy. you are going to want to shoot at least a 650gr arrow. I have two arrow designs I shoot. 1st one is 600+ grains and the other is 950gr. I shoot any where from a 175gr broadhead to a 315gr broadhead. Both fly very very well and they fly well above the speeds the calculators said. I strongly recommend reading all the Dr. Ashby reports you can find and call and talk to any of the guys at Alaska Bow hunting supply. They are the people who you are going to want to get your info from. Any company that can get a pass through on an elephant with a compound or drop a cape buffalo with a 70lb re-curve bow (Yes I said cape buffalo with a 70lb recurve!!!!)is the company you want to talk too. All of Dr Ashby reports are on the website as well. http://www.alaskabowhunting.com In addition KE really does not matter, you want to focus on momentum and ft lbs slug. KE is only applicable with firearms. But that is a topic for another time.

What, you mean you can actually kill animals with a primitive weapin like the Indians did back in the day? Some people are so caught up in speed and the "numbers game" when they should really just get back to some basics. Well said ET.....

Id use a very well built 2 blade like the125 gr "solid broadhead"..if you want more arrow weight or FOC you can add brass weights to the front

I know that some disagree with math and such but here are a set of numbers,
500 grains at 253 gives .5617 momentum 700 grains at 186 gives .5812 momentum 800 grains at 153 gives .5435 momentum
I know some don't think their bow is confined to the same rules as everyone else but tend to think they are wrong. 340 ibo, 70 lbs, 29 inch draw, 80 grains on the string for speed numbers. I think at 500 grains with a good 2 blade as bobo mentioned you are good. Check it with a chrono. Or if you are like some you will need to find a packing house that will let you shoot through a side of beef I guess.

Good discussion guys. I'm familiar with the Alaska Bowhunting site and I've read some of Dr. Ashby's reports. Thanks for the link! I'm eyeing the Silver Flame broadheads as a potential choice. I'm planning to shoot a little heavier than 500 grains. 750 is probably too high but maybe 600-ish. Still researching shafts and broadheads, but starting to make a short list so I can get some fletched up and start practicing!

I prefer a single bevel broadhead such as the Samurai, Ashby, Nanook, or Maasai. The rotational force that you get just explodes bones and increases penetration. But I do shoot both styles. The new Silver flame XXL leaves a blood trail like you would not believe. It is 175gr and has almost a 2" cutting diameter. It is awesome. You mentioned 750 gr being to heavy? Why do you think that? I bet that you could get to a 650gr to 700 gr ish arrow very easily. Whats your draw length? Have you looked into the Grizzlystik Momentum arrows? They are awesome.

i shot mine with a mathews drenalin at 62 lbs with an easton epic 340 and a 125 grain slick trick.
one arrow is all it took. if you havent looked at a shot placement chart for bison please do. if you shoot it in the arm pit like a deer it will be a gut shot. you MUST line up with the front leg.
good luck and have fun!

If you do in the "armpit" area, it may not be the best shot. Looking at the pic, the reticle is not in the armpit.
