If I were to sell one of my guns to someone I do not know (online), how do I go about transferring it so that it is no longer in my name? I feel like I should trust the buyer, but you just never know. Do I bring it to an FFL who sends it to another FFL, or can I ship straight to the buyers FFL? Can both parties meet at an FFL and complete the transaction? I appreciate any advise thrown my way.

There is no transfer on private sales. Since there's no registration, the gun is not "in your name".
Write out a bill of sale identifying you (seller), the buyer and the weapon involved (make, model, caliber, serial #). Date and signed by both parties.

Yes. You can do all of the above.

If it is a rifle, they can just send you the money and you can ship it to their house through USPS. Nothing else is required.
If a handgun, you must use an FFL for shipping.
You don't need any documentation whatsoever when you sell a gun, although the FFL may require something.

When the buyer is out of state you have to use a FFL. I have my FFL ship to theirs, who in turn transfers ownership to the buyer. That's the best scenario in my opinion.

just because you done paper work on it the only person that knows its in your name is the ffl dealer. he keeps the paper work in his file for ever. unless you have it stolen and turn it in to the the law the seriel number just comes back clean.
